We will host 9 professional productions from across the country, a student show from Toronto, and myriad ancillary events to enrich your experience. The productions range tremendously in scale and address an array of subjects, in many different styles. What they share is the ability and desire to tour, a notion that is at the very core of Magnetic North.

Call for Plays - Jury - New Canadian Drama 2010 Deadline: March 31, 2010
The pilot project for Canadian plays, established in 2006 by the Embassy of Canada in collaboration with Canadian Heritage, is now entering its 5th year and is organized since 2007 also in collaboration with the Québec Government Office in Berlin and the International Theatre Institute Germany in Berlin. Its aim remains to introduce and promote new anglo- and francophone Canadian drama in Germany.
Canadian and Québecois partners (such as Playwrights' Guild Toronto and CEAD Montreal, as well as many experts, dramaturges, directors, etc.) provided more than 120 plays in total. The plays were pre-selected, read and evaluated by the jury members, according to their potential in the multi-faceted German theatre market. In 2009, five plays were chosen. With a distribution in three languages (German, English, French) to over 600 professional contacts across the German-speaking and European theatre scene, the selection showed very promising results. This initiative raised and stabilized interest of dramaturges, artistic directors, directors, translators and agents in New Canadian Drama.
The complexity of the German theatre system demands and allows various ways to reach the decision makers. Our project is not only aimed at introducing and promoting new Canadian plays for stages in Germany, but, in a larger sense, at creating substantial networks and future collaborations especially between Canada and Germany. We experience an expanding interest from countries such as Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Poland in promoting the results of this special project.
Required material should include:
completed application form; in English or French(for a copy of the application form, please email charmian@patthedog.org)
play - including date of origin
short synopsis of the play
short CV of the playwright;
foreign rights information (who is the agent or the holder of the rights?)
If required information is incomplete, the jury will be unable to accept neither the application nor the play submitted!
Please be also aware of the following NEW criteria:
Plays submitted should not be older than three years, meaning that they should neither have been written before 2007, nor have been presented to the public (reading, workshop, production or publication) before that date.
Plays don't necessarily have to have been produced in Canada/Québec already.
Plays should not yet be represented by a German agent or publisher.
The jury is, according to the German theatre market, interested in well-made plays, in all forms of new writing and, generally, in plays that deal with the challenges of today’s life, private and political, and with relevant social issues, i.e. cultural diversity, migration, open society, unemployment, environmental issues or demography.
Plays that have an obvious exclusive regional or local Canadian interest are more difficult to export to Germany.
Please do not send adaptations based on novels or films.
Plays for young audiences are welcome.
We kindly ask to send all material (preferably in PDF-format) to the Embassy of Canada in Berlin, Gabriele Naumann-Maerten (gabriele.naumann-maerten@international.gc.ca) and to the Québec Government Office in Berlin, Marie-Elisabeth Räkel (marie-elisabeth.rakel@mri.gouv.qc.ca)

Events World Theatre Day -- March 27, 2010
World Theatre Day was created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute, and is celebrated annually on March 27 around the world. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau in 1962. Previous authors have included Peter Brook, Robert LePage and Augusto Boal. This year's message comes from Dame Judi Dench and appears below.
World Theatre Day Message 2010 by Dame Judi Dench
World Theatre Day is an opportunity to celebrate Theatre in all its myriad forms. Theatre is a source of entertainment and inspiration and has the ability to dignify the many diverse cultures and peoples that exist throughout the world. But theatre is more than that and also provides opportunities to educate and inform.
Theatre is performed throughout the world and not always in a traditional theatre setting. Performances can occur in a small village in Africa, next to a mountain in Armenia, on a tiny island in the Pacific. All it needs is a space and an audience. Theatre has the ability to make us smile, to make us cry, but should also make us think and reflect.
Theatre comes about through team work. Actors are the people who are seen, but there is an amazing set of people who are not seen. They are equally as important as the actors and their differing and specialist skills make it possible for a production to take place. They too must share in any triumphs and successes that may hopefully occur.
March 27 is always the official World Theatre Day. In many ways every day should be considered a theatre day, as we have a responsibility to continue the tradition to entertain, to educate and to enlighten our audiences, without whom we couldn’t exist.
