Welcome to the 1st Honoring Aging Women  eNews!
As women (and men), we start aging from the moment we are born.  As women, we receive messages each day that it is not okay to age – whether we’re 20, 30, 60 or 80.  Most of the women we have spoken to concur and say that this experience is normalized, yet rarely discussed.  This documentary is being created to address these issues - to question them, and turn them up side down.  Learn more.

Once a month, we'll be sending this newsletter out to give you a heads up about the documentary.  We’ll be expressing gratitude to those exceptional people that contribute to the project; sharing factoid’s about women and aging; providing the latest monthly milestones; and more.

Special thanks!
Watch out for this because you could be mentioned this month or next!  For June, the people I want to publicly appreciate are Amanda Micheli, Frank Nijenkamp, Sheila Malkind, and Tom Borden

I approached Amanda Micheli several months ago at a San Francisco Film Society screening, and asked if she’d be willing to mentor me for a trade.  She graciously met with me (with no trade), and with her earnestness, time and knowledge, she helped steer me in the right direction.  Frank Nijenkamp has provided undying emotional support to me for the duration of the project, and generously contributed to funding expenses for the May shoots in D.C.  Sheila Malkind has donated her time to connecting me with Older Women’s League (OWL) members, and has agreed to be a new character in the documentary!  She’s also a wonderful person and new ally.  Tom Borden is a well-seasoned filmmaker that has coached me on a number of issues, and has asked for nothing in return.  He’s a super cool dude, and has agreed to be our new west coast Director of Photography.  It’s with the generosity of spirit (and more) from many people that helps make important projects like this happen.  Thanks to all of you!

Milestones to date
Each month, we will publish milestones from the previous month.  Since this is our first eNewsletter, here are the biggest ones since the beginning of the project:
  • November 2008 - we successfully interviewed seven amazing women!  Three women speak about their personal experiences about aging in America, two Professors of Law at Georgetown University talk to us about cultural norms and policies that protect and hurt women as they age, and two activists in the movement speak about how they are supporting women in their aging process.  Meet our characters on the project’s home page.
  • December 2008 - we completed the documentary 10-minute work-in-progress.  Thanks to Doyle Saylor, Erin Palmquist and Nathan Jongewaard who helped make this happen!
  • March 2009 - we received fiscal sponsorship from the San Francisco Film Society
  • April 2009 - the 10-minute work-in-progress was screened at the Lake Arrowhead Film Festival.  Several women (and men) approached us afterwards and thanked us for doing a documentary on this topic, adding that they've never seen this topic covered before.
  • May 2009 - we recruited a new west coast and east coast Director of Photography.  As mentioned earlier, Tom Borden will be our new lead on the west coast, and Marian Dealy will be leading efforts on the east coast.  See crew bios on the project home page.
  • May 2009 - we were in Washington D.C. to shoot 95-year old, Ruth Nadel (with a video camera) in her home - working, and telling stories about her life as a mother and activist.  While in D.C., we also shot the 2009 Foremother Awards ceremony and an OWL-sponsored briefing on Capital Hill called Elder Abuse: It’s a Woman’s Issue.  See our Facebook Group page for pictures.
  • May 2009 - we had the opportunity to raise awareness about the documentary and some of the issues around aging women in this country.  The Director (that’s me!) was interviewed about the project on a Bay Area public access show, In Our Midst.  Ironically, I was the first female filmmaker they’d ever interviewed.  How appropriate for the topic of the documentary!
For July
Next month, expect to see TV footage of the interview with me about Honoring Aging Women on the public access channel, In Our Midst

You are receiving our monthly newsletter because you asked the Director to be added, signed up for the list or are part of the project.
