Monthly Branch Meeting: Broward Branch Meeting --Topic: Localecopia -- Benevolence Through Buying Locally

Buying locally is a good bet for reducing pollution and the energy used to transport, store and refrigerate food. Consider that most of the 270 million pounds of imported grapes that arrive in California every year have traveled 5,900 miles from Chile. Throughout the course of the year, the cargo ships and trucks that transport them release 7,000 tons of global warming pollution into the air. When all other factors are equal, choosing local food for your business and at home is good for the planet, good for your health, and good for the local economy.

This month's meeting features Localecopia, a nonprofit organization focused on bringing together businesses, producers, educators and government organizations for the purpose of lessening our carbon footprint by supporting local product consumption, helping operations better utilize waste and bringing together individuals to help achieve sustainable business practices.

The Broward 2030 Committee --
Advocating Green Building

The USGBC and its Chapters provide green building educational information and resources to a variety of constituencies.  The South Florida Chapter’s advocacy resources are focused in several key areas -- State and local governments, schools and school districts, and homeowners and residential developers.  The Chapter also works closely with the USGBC National office, as well as with other USGBC Chapters throughout the State of Florida on statewide issues.

USGBC Chapter National Style.pngIn essence, the South Florida Chapter is committed to supporting Federal, State and our local South Florida governments in their pursuit and development of green building programs and initiatives.  Our nonprofit organization's input is sought on major policies and legislative and regulatory initiatives.  In our advocacy-focused volunteer leadership and other USGBC resources, governments and public-private partnerships have access to best practices, lessons learned and other initiatives already in place across the USA.

Community Spotlight:

Pompano Beach -- Green Initiatives Shaping Our Future

The City of Pompano Beach is currently making improvements to provide more environmentally friendly municipal programs and practices. Pompano Beach's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy savings, water reuse and conservation programs and green building programs are some of the ways the city is promoting resource conservation and environmental stewardship.

Pompano Beach’s commitment to sustainability began over 20 years ago, when city officials launched the progressive water reuse system called Our Alternate Supply Irrigation System (OASIS). OASIS provides approximately two million gallons per day of irrigation water to the area and has saved over 10 billion gallons of Biscayne Aquifer water. Reuse water is created by taking treated wastewater and providing further treatment by filtration and disinfection to make that water usable for irrigation of lawns. Since 1989, the City of Pompano Beach has been using the “purple pipes” to deliver reuse water to golf courses, parks, playing fields and road medians. The city now allows single family homeowners to connect to the OASIS system where it is available, and offers financing to spread the costs over time. Grant money is available to eligible low and moderate income homeowners.

Additionally, the city is distributing 2000 water conservation kits (shower head, kitchen and bathroom faucet aerators) free of charge to residential water customers.  This program is partially funded through a grant from the South Florida Water Management District. The city has sponsored two elementary school classrooms to receive water conservation instruction through the Waterwise Program.  Children receive water conservation devices, such as faucet aerators, and tools to check for leaks around the home.  This program empowers children to become water conservation advocates in their home and in our community.

Discouraging urban sprawl, increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are also top priorities for the land development of Pompano Beach. This begins with the city’s comprehensive plan, which was amended to include objectives and policies that foster energy efficient land use patterns. To enact these policies, the city is completely rewriting the zoning code to promote mixed-use, pedestrian and transit-friendly development; to increase energy conservation and renewable energy production; and is considering additional incentives for green buildings. Pompano Beach also continuously strives to incorporate sustainable features into city and Community Redevelopment Agency projects.

A number of other important efforts are underway for this year. The city has prepared an energy strategy that has dedicated funding to retrofit City Hall’s central cooling tower and to retrofit street lights with energy efficient fixtures. The City Commission recently voted to create an electronic plan review process accessible through the city’s web site. This will not only decrease the amount of paper wasted, but will reduce unnecessary travel to the city. This initiative will compliment the green building program, which offers incentives to green certified projects such as “fast-track” permitting, reduced permitting fees and final project designation by the city.

These efforts position the city to be a positive example for other municipalities that are striving towards the same goal of more efficient, cost effective and sustainable practices. The City of Pompano Beach is committed to taking everyday actions that will make our city a healthy, safe and vibrant community for today’s citizens and for future generations.

History of Our Branch

The Broward Branch's activities range from our monthly education programs to instructive tours of green facilities (e.g., the Liberty Center at Monarch Lakes), from social networking (e.g., Facebook, and LinkedIn) to GREENworking gatherings, from helping municipalities and the Broward League of Cities with their green initiatives to co-sponsorship of green conferences and events.  The Branch has educated local government officials and CEOs about sustainability (most noteworthy, by generation of the powerful and comprehensive Broward 2030 Report), brought in high-profile speakers for important conferences, celebrated the holidays together, worked with children and educators to teach green principles, sponsored study sessions for eager students, hosted webcasts (e.g., risk and insurance issues in green development ... and much more.
