Vancouver 2010: The Olympic Games Go Green
Among all of the stories of struggle, triumph and tragedy in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, there is one that is easily overlooked: Vancouver 2010 will go down in history as The Green Olympics.
When Vancouver approached the task of hosting an Olympic Games, it did so with committment to sustainability. From the development of Olympic venues in accordance to the LEED building rating system, including a LEED Platinum Community Center, to the creation of public transportation systems to eliminate dependence on single-occupant vehicles, Vancouver amassed a sustainability effort of which the world should take note. Recycle Tech to Showcase First LEED Certified Container Building in South Florida Recycle Tech announced that on March 23, 2010, a groundbreaking ceremony will take place to present the model of the first container building that is LEED Certified in Overtown, South Florida. The facility has already exceeded the building code standards in Florida, including seismic testing and wind resistance. The company will now produce and supply high-quality container homes that are environmentally friendly, and also deliver green homes, buildings, communities and city structures that are LEED Certified throughout the world. The affordable and flexible structures manufactured by Recycle Tech will reduce pollution, cut down waste materials, and enable millions of homeless, including people living in low-income housing, to increase their quality of life. These flexible structures will also help to meet the demands of upper- and middle-class buyers who are environmentally friendly. Source: http://recycletechinc.com
Florida 7-Eleven® Store Takes the LEED As Retailer’s First ‘Green’ Store
DELAND, FL (Feb. 24, 2010) -- When 7-Eleven Inc. Project Manager Jonathon Pauls looks at the company’s newest store in DeLand, he sees green … two kinds of green. Next week, the company opens its first “green” 7-Eleven® store as defined by the USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Paperwork has been submitted to the USGBC to request LEED certification for the new store.
The store is located at 319 N. Woodland Avene. at the intersection of Ohio Ave. A celebration of the store’s grand opening will take place in March.
“The second ‘green’ is the savings in energy the new environmentally friendly design brings to the store’s bottom line,” said Pauls.
A LEED Accredited professional himself, Pauls took the lead for 7-Eleven’s green-building program in Florida. Indeed, when 7-Eleven embarked on site selection for its first green store, the construction team chose a previously developed commercial location where an auto mechanic shop had operated. more>
