The 2010 Natural Talent Design Competition - REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! USGBC's 2010 Natural Design Competition, in partnership with Salvation Army’s EnviRenew Initiative, is focused on the rebuilding effort in New Orleans. Competitors will be divided into students and young professionals groups and will design a LEED for Homes project that is priced affordably and is functional for elderly occupants. Up to four designs will be selected from the local competition finalists to be showcased at Greenbuild 2010 and, for the first time, the designers will see their projects built in New Orleans’ Broadmoor neighborhood. Once the homes are built, they will enter a measurement and verification phase in which they will be graded on energy efficiency, water reuse, and indoor air quality among other categories. The design team whose home performs best during measurement and verification will be awarded the final grand prize. Registration is $50 per student team and $75 per emerging professional team. Download the complete Program Description (PDF) » Download the Host Chapter Guidelines (PDF) » Download the promotional one-pager (PDF) » Student/Emerging Professionals Scholarships The USGBC South Florida Chapter is pleased to announce the 2010 Emerging Professionals Scholarship Program. This year, ten scholarships will be awarded to local college students and young professionals (30 years old or younger) to allow them to enter the building industry or further their existing careers with recognition as LEED Accredited Professionals or Green Associates.
The USGBC South Florida Chapter gratefully acknowledges the two sponsors of this new scholarship program -- Dave Vernon and Resource 4 Floors, and Rob Hink and The Spinnaker Group. Learn more about our Donors Circle Program ...
These scholarships will allow recipients to attend one of the LEED Technical Review Workshops offered by the South Florida Chapter in 2010. The scholarships also will cover the cost of taking the LEED Accreditation Examination or the Green Associates Exan. Through this scholarship program, young professionals earning the prestigious LEED AP credential will join the ranks of the most progressive members of the building industry and will be able to offer employers a set of skills that is increasingly in demand. The Green Associate designation will also put recipients on this path. At the entry level, an employee oriented in the principles of green building will be a valuable and affordable asset to organizations seeking to transform their practices.
Scholarships will be awarded based on the clarity of a letter of interest that explains the applicant’s understanding of sustainability and how he/she hopes to apply the principles of green building in their future work. Click here to review Scholarship Application ...
The Broward 2030 Committee Needs Your Help The Broward 2030 initiative began in February 2008 in response to the majority of the Broward Mayors signing on in support of several national climate and energy conservation programs. Broward 2030 Committee was established to clarify and educate Broward County communities on furthering their goals. Mission Statement: To be an educational resource to Broward County ’s local governments, education and community leaders, and the building industry for sustainable development using proven methods and technologies for conservation of energy, water, materials, and natural resources as it pertains to the built environment. A 77 page report was generated by the committee which includes a “Roadmap to Sustainability”. Current Goal: Our current goal is to bring the message to each of the 31 municipalities in Broward County. A small subcommittee has formed and has taken on the challenge to deliver the message. The Broward 2030 Committee is currently researching Broward's municipalities to determine where each community stands insofar as their efforts to become "Sustainable". This information will assist us in our coordination efforts to share information between municipalities, to reduce energy consumption, water consumption and waste reduction. We are seeking additional members to join our committee in our quest to research, share the information, and educate the public. If you have a few hours to spare each month and are interested in this project, please contact Gladys Digirolamo, Broward 2030 Chair. History of Our Branch The Broward Branch's activities range from our monthly education programs to instructive tours of green facilities (e.g., the Liberty Center at Monarch Lakes), from social networking (e.g., Facebook, and LinkedIn) to GREENworking gatherings, from helping municipalities and the Broward League of Cities with their green initiatives to co-sponsorship of green conferences and events. The Branch has educated local government officials and CEOs about sustainability (most noteworthy, by generation of the powerful and comprehensive Broward 2030 Report), brought in high-profile speakers for important conferences, celebrated the holidays together, worked with children and educators to teach green principles, sponsored study sessions for eager students, hosted webcasts (e.g., risk and insurance issues in green development ... and much more.
