What's New

There have been some great stories in the news this past month about conservation in California and bond-financed projects and programs. From cleaning up our beaches, to helping restore river flows in the San Joaquin River, investments in conservation are helping restore and protect California’s land, water and parks.

Project in Focus: Orange County’s Groundwater Replenishment System

The largest water purification system of its kind, Orange County’s award-winning Groundwater Replenishment System in Fountain Valley is a great example of a successful water supply/quality project that was helped made possible by voter-approved bonds.

The system produces enough water to meet the needs of 500,000 people annually. This state-of-the art purification system reclaims wastewater and returns it to the local groundwater basin where it blends with water from the Santa Ana and Colorado rivers and the State Water Project before it is pumped into homes and businesses. The $481 million project, financed in part with $37 million from Proposition 13 and funding from other sources, has been so successful that other cities consider it a model to follow in seeking new water supplies.

“Orange County’s Groundwater Replenishment System is a prime example of the innovative and groundbreaking projects that have been made possible by Californians’ investments in conservation. Here in Orange County, we are improving water quality and helping create a more sustainable local water supply and that wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t have the funds to complete this project,” said Steve Sheldon, President, Orange County Water District.

The system is now running at close to full capacity and water from the system began to reach homes last week. For more details on the system, check out the Orange County Register’s article from earlier this month.
