eNewsletter - March 2010 In this issue COMEDY NIGHT REVIEW NEW FAMILIES APPLYING FOR NEXT YEAR MUSIC CAFE! MARCH - TAKE NOTE Comedy Night Review Big thanks to everyone who came out to support Comedy Night! We raised more $8,000 for the school and gave four students (including Clare, pictured here) a chance to showcase their talent on stage.
One of the highlights of the night came from PSCS parent Julia Smith, who gave a testimonial that captured the gift of PSCS in a way that we’ve never heard before. Julia, who was a physician for 20 years, called PSCS “the ulimate preventive medicine.” Here’s an excerpt:
“It wasn’t long after I entered into practice that I discovered that the majority of patients who came to see me did not have disease. Rather their symptoms derived most often from some kind of distress about their lives—they felt at the effect of life instead of being the authors of their lives.
“It struck me that this was the ‘desperation of the masses’ Thoreau talked of over a century ago and patients would bring their desperation to the one place they could legitimately bring it—the doctor's office. And yet what they needed was not treatment; they needed new learning. They needed in fact what it is that our children get when they come to PSCS—the encouragement to turn toward themselves, to discover and live from passion and connection instead of fear and separation, to experience themselves as having a purpose, a set of gifts that gives them a unique and valued place in the human community. “
Isn’t that great?

And, we’re getting the sense that the feeling is mutual. Here’s part of an email we received from one mom:
“Well, first let me say that [my son] was glowing. [He] isn't only willing to visit, I think he's willing to move in. He came home saying that if he could have dreamt up any school, created the school, and attended a school—it would be PSCS. It most certainly impressed him, tremendously. As it did for both [my husband] and me. So, thanks to you all for the wonderful peek into a learning environment that seems to mirror what lives in my family's combined vision of what an optimal, exciting, dynamic learning environment can look like!”
Music Cafe! Music Café is set for Wednesday, March 10, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Please join us at school for delicious desserts, a fun community, and—of course—music! We’re still in negotiations with some of the musical acts, so stay tuned for a final set list in the days to come.
The cost is free. Hope to see you there!

Monthly Quote"Compliance is simple to measure, simple to test for and simple to teach. Punish non-compliance, reward obedience and repeat. Schools like teaching compliance. They're pretty good at it.
"To top it off, until recently the customers of a school or training program (the companies that hire workers) were buying compliance by the bushel. Initiative was a red flag, not an asset.
"Of course, now that's all changed. The economy has rewritten the rules, and smart organizations seek out intelligent problem solvers. Everything is different now. Except the part about how much easier it is to teach compliance."
– Seth Godin Testimonial “PSCS is an innovative, cutting edge school that is preparing students to become leaders who can make a difference in our ever changing world. It is a unique and rare oasis in an educational desert which support kids to be fully and express who they are. My son loves it and is thriving there!”
