Valentine's Day is sexier than New Year's and can be just as fun. Before it's too late (and we won't tell your girlfriend), make your plans for V-Day here ... We need your input: A Dallas reader is hosting three people in from Liverpool -- who no doubt hate Tom Hicks and his family -- and he wants to know what to do with them in Dallas. Think you've got the answer? ... Rick Perry will be anointed "Governor for Life" and Jerry Jones is sponsoring a new show called So You Think You Can Kick. Haven't heard any of this on the news? A PegNews contributor thinks it could all happen in 2010 (plus lots more) ... Chick Talk Dallas isn't taking the TCU butt branding thing sitting down. Get a piece of her mind about the assinine situation ... Hundreds of brilliantly-dressed people ascended on Dallas Comic Con. Check out real superheroes in the flesh, plus a photo shoot with devilishly handsome Sean Patrick Flanery ... And good news for musicians and artists: The Denton Community Market, when it opens in April, will feature musicians and local vendors to help draw a larger crowd.
Artsy We learned (perhaps for the first time ever) that in the eyes of Hollywood, Dallas has more great singers than terrible ones. Relive the American Idol Dallas auditions one more time ... The Nasher's new exhibit, called Jaume Plensa: Genus and Species, just started January 30. Check out why this exhibit is unlike all the others at Nasher ... Did you happen to see The Buried Life last week on MTV? We have the inside story on one of the families featured ... John Garcia's The Column, a content partner for PegNews, released its Column Awards nominations. See if your favorite show made the list ... And the stage is hoppin'. Here are our local theater reviews: Flix Dallas darlings The Polyphonic Spree will be creating a documentary about the "invisible" children in Uganda. They'll travel there to witness the devastation firsthand ... The Texas Black Film Festival takes place this week. Included in the lengthy lineup of shows is a documentary by Fort Worth filmmakers ... John checks in with the new director of the Motion Picture Production Program at Dallas' KD Studio. See video of Dennis Bishop as he explains his new mission ... Before you hit the box office this weekend, allow us to delight you with these film reviews: Dear John (reviewed by our dear John, coincidentally), From Paris with Love, White Ribbon, and Killing Kasztner.
Best bites
Chef JW Foster of the Fairmont Dallas will leave Big D to be executive chef at the Fairmont San Francisco ... Check the progress of The Green Room before it reopens ... Popolos Cafe in Dallas closed last weekend. Get news about their new venture and read comments from people who will miss the Preston/Royal restaurant ... We're sad to report that Darryl Beeson, a well-known wine expert and sommelier in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, has died at age 54. The service is on Friday ... Are you ready for Mardi Gras? (We mean food. Of course you're ready to overindulge in Hand Grenades.) Check out what Chamberlain's Fish Market Grill cooked up in honor of the drunken tradition ... And allow us to give you food for thought before you head out the door for dinner. We've got reviews for:
Risky bidness A company in Dallas opened their doors early to raise money for displaced people in Haiti. Learn what Shirts=Awesome is doing to help out ... New content partner Rational Radio chides Congressman Jeb Hensarling of Dallas for a "d'oh!" moment ... Dentonites are encouraged by the new developers of Fry Street, who seem to genuinely care about residents' concerns (and their desire to bring back the beloved street) ... And one of our content partners, the Collin County Observer, is posting all Collin County campaign finance reports online for your enjoyment.
Game What are you doing for the Super Bowl? We've got ideas (below), as well as a professional picker who knows who will win the game ... Dirk is hopeful for a strong season, he tells our new Mavs reporter ... If you don't get offended by religious jokes, check out Todd's 10 commandments of hockey. It's all in good fun ... North Texans get ballsy in the annual Bowl for the Cure this Friday ... Marty Turco made 40 saves for a Dallas Stars win against the Minnesota Wild Tuesday night ... And the Mavs lost to the Utah Jazz at an away game but face the Golden State Warriors Wednesday at the AAC.
Music Picture a guy in lederhosen playing accordion. And then erase that thought and consider that last weekend, a musician stopped by Fort Worth (sans lederhosen) and made that accordion hum in a way we've never seen. Check out the incredible ways of Mark Growden ... Crisman has a report on Fort Worth band the Orbans: One member is playing backup for Ringo Starr while the rest are mixing their first album and laying low. We'll be glad to have them back on the scene soon ... Catch video of Denton regular Don Chani ... And jam out to Eleven Hundred Springs' new album. They're playing Billy Bob's on Friday.
Pegasus Picks for the weekend
Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday- Isn't there some kind of sporting event today? Gilley's invites you, all your buddies, and your beer-drinking skills.
- There is still time in the day to hit the Dallas International Boat Show and watch football. Head to the boat show (which actually starts on Friday) to drool over yachts and speed boats.
- Oak Cliff is also celebrating Mardi Gras with a street festival and parade. We're guessing this is yet another great way to earn some beads.
