After the jam
Oliver's latest musical and stylistic obsession comes in the shape of one man, one band and a fusion of sound. Paul Weller's 1980s musical troupe The Style Council thrust soul and funk influences into a heavily-produced sound. Oli loves it. An image from the album "A Paris" graces the front page of the website. And the kind of sharp casual kit sported by Weller and band-mate Mick Talbot is bang on the new Oliver Spencer collection. Summer cardigans are a case in point, made in blends of cotton and wool. The cream number with contrast stripes on the placket is a real icon.

Paris in the Spring

Oli enjoys his trips to Paris above any other city and - besides the unfortunate business when his train stuck in the snow - this month was no exception. February means scouting for fabrics, staying at the Philippe Starck-designed Mama Shelter hotel near Pere Lachaise cemetery (resting place of Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison), dining at the Chez Georges (1 rue du Mail, 75002 - be sure to book), and shopping at the Left Bank's Bon Marche (24 rue de Sevres, 75007) - possibly mainland Europe's best department store. And we're not saying that just because it carries Oliver Spencer. It's such a cracking store you almost wish you'd lost your luggage, as an excuse to rebuild your wardrobe from its exquisitely chosen wares.

MEANWHILE BACK IN LONDON
Cooler than a fixed gear? Maybe. More elegant than a mountain bike? Definitely. Smaller than a BMX? Absolutely. Yes, we're talking Brompton folding bicycles. Oli rides one to the HQ most days. He favours an S3L - the sportier frame - in Racing Green, with a Brooks leather saddle. Gorgeous. Bromptons are beautifully made and, like most Oliver Spencer products, made in England, too. They're stylish and practical and it's incredible what they can achieve from just three gears. London is a nice city where nice things get nicked. So being able to bring it off the street is a bonus, too. To try one is to love 'em.

THE DRUMS, ESMERELDA, THE DRUMS

Are The Drums the hottest band in New York? They have a cool, very now sound, like the Beach Boys mashed with New Order. And there's an immediacy to the melodies reminiscent of 1950s pop. NME called them "the most contagiously energetic NYC band of the past 10 years" - which hits the nail on the head. And lead singer Jonathan Pierce used to be the Oliver Spencer store manager in NYC, so we're sold!
