Intercontinental Melbourne The Rialto - EC3 Global Green Rating Tool Breakthrough
The recently completed AUD$65 Million refurbishment of the InterContinental Melbourne “The Rialto” owned by Eureka Funds Management, has been awarded Green Globe Certified status. It is the first hotel refurbishment project to be awarded under a new environmental rating tool for the hospitality industry developed by EC3 Global using the research and science of the STCRC. The tool fills a significant gap in the market as many existing rating tools are not tailored specifically to meet the needs of the Hotel sector and do not provide a holistic pathway to operational benchmarking, measurement and reporting on CSR/TBL performance.
Sustainable planning and design is a prerequisite of long term sustainable operations. For those projects that have not yet been built (or are being rebuilt or refurbished) Building Planning & Design Standard (BPDS) provides a sustainable approach from inception to completion.

The People Behind EC3: Gustavo Ramos
Gustavo Ramos
Approved Green Globe Auditor & Ambassador
With Green Globe Asia Pacific (now managed by EC3 Global) since 2004.
Green Globe Auditor, Gustavo Ramos, has been providing Certification Services in Mexico and Latin America under both the Company and Community Standards since 2004.
Gustavo is a native of Chihuahua, but trained and worked as a veterinarian and a teacher in Mexico City before undertaking a Masters degree in environmental planning and sustainable development in 2000. He has written several textbooks in biological science and has extensive experience in management training.
Gustavo has provided Certification Services on behalf of EC3 throughout Mexico and Latin America working in particular with the Community of Huatulco, and the beautiful cultural and natural destination of the Riviera Maya, extending along the coast of Mexico from Cancun. He recently took time to show the world-acclaimed natural park of Xel-Ha to Claire Hendrie, EC3's Operations Manager from Brisbane. Xel-Ha is an open-sea aquarium offering a myriad of land, water and cultural activities, and joined Green Globe in 2008 in order to showcase its best practise ecological and sustainability activities. One of the results of that Certification Audit is a very interesting video posted to Youtube, a walk-through of Xel-Ha and its sustainable practices (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDjtY2K0EyI).
As a very successful Auditor in his region, servicing approximately 40 hotels, one Community, one Attraction park and one Tour Operator, Gustavo is an integral part of the EC3 team. His knowledge and expertise has made a major contribution towards bringing Mexican tourism, in particular, into sustainable practices and drawing the Green Globe program to the forefront of eco-certification in North America.
