Aspiring to Stronger Partnerships
Townsville Enterprise, North Queensland’s Regional Tourism Organisation, has recently adopted a local government engagement strategy to improve regional coordination in delivering sustainable tourism outcomes with its local government and industry partners. Townsville Enterprise implemented ASPIRE to assess the organisation’s current performance and has adopted the program as a key tool to monitor and compare its achievements annually as part of a commitment to good governance and stronger, performance-based partnerships. ASPIRE is an online program that provides local authorities a framework for best practice in organisational reporting and benchmarking.

Clubs go Green with CDOL Earthcheck
CDOL Earthcheck is a new, web-based program that will for the first time enable licensed community-based clubs to measure and manage their environmental performance. The program enables clubs to effectively measure, benchmark, report and manage their business’ internal sustainability programs, with particular focus on energy, water, waste, carbon emission levels and community commitment. CDOL Earthcheck is an internationally-recognised web-based carbon measurement and sustainability benchmarking program that is formed out of a partnership between Club Data Online and EC3 Global.
“CDOL Earthcheck grew out of a strong belief that, as an industry, clubs need to further promote their genuine - yet often challenged - position by demonstrating a strong sense of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),” Greg Hurley, General Manager for Club Data Online (CDOL)

EC3 Global - What does the 3 stand for?
People often wonder what the ‘3’ in EC3 Global stands for. The 3 stands for the principles behind Triple Bottom Line. The triple bottom line indicates an organisation’s commitment to being environmentally, socially and economically responsible. Our commitment to helping organisations and communities achieve environmental, social and economic viability is the foundation of the work that we do here at EC3 Global.
The People Behind EC3: Claire Hendrie
Claire Hendrie Operations Manager With Green Globe Asia Pacific (now managed by EC3 Global) since 2004. For me, tourism is the greatest form of cultural exchange through which we can better understand each other and world we live in. However, if not managed responsibly, the impacts of tourism can potentially destroy the resources on which it depends. The best part of my job is seeing the commitment of operators to not only minimise their negative impacts, but also to enhance the environment, culture and communities in which they operate.
Outside of the office I live an active lifestyle and enjoy playing Volleyball, going to the beach and swimming in the ocean. I recently returned from an extended trip to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean which was a mix of business and pleasure. I enjoyed finally meeting face-to-face with clients with whom I have worked with over the past four years in Canada and the Caribbean. I also volunteer once a week with the Multicultural Development Association to help recent immigrants settle into Australian life. This work is extremely fulfilling as it gives me an opportunity to learn about new cultures and give back to my community.
It is exciting to be at the forefront of a global movement of businesses worldwide who are actively addressing and leading the way in sustainable tourism.
Celebrating Industry's Green Wins Each month we will share an industry initiative that is helping to pave the path towards a more sustainable future.
Environmentally Sustainable Business Events
The Business Events industry’s increasing demands for environmentally responsible Business Events suppliers, including venues, catering, accommodation, is a challenge. In 2007/08 Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB) undertook a series of environmental and Convention Bureau firsts, including:
• Launching Melbourne's 'Green Credentials' Summary Report - identifying green initiatives undertaken by Victorian government bodies and Business Event suppliers. • Setting a new benchmark for exhibitions, following AIME 2008’s Climate Neutral™ status. • Publishing a ‘Green Checklist’ in the MCVB Planner’s Guide to assist the Business Events industry in planning environmentally sustainable events. • Partnering with Climate Friendly™ to deliver a Climate Neutral™ member Christmas event. • Undertaking an audit of MCVB’s operations to improve water, waste and energy usage.
