FOTE09 - Update

DATE: October 2nd, 2009

This year we will be at the Royal Geographic Society.

We are happy to announce some very interesting speakers for this year's conference including Dr Paul Miller, one of the leading opinion formers on cloud computing, who offered to share his thoughts with our delegates. A delegate last year and speaking this time around about mobile technologies is Dr. Bill Ashraf, Director of Technology Enhanced Learning at University of Sussex.

There's more to come but we need to sort out the nitty gritty before getting into more detail.

We can however tell you the themes we are planning to cover this year:

Cloud Computing - Is there a right and wrong time to use it and what are the pros and cons?

Anytime, Anywhere learning - mobile devices and rich media as a key part of the delivery of teaching and learning outside of the classroom/lecture hall

Virtual Worlds Panel – debate on the use of virtual worlds in education (For/Against)

Social Media - how does it apply to teaching and learning and it's role within the student recruitment process

Students perspective - in the end they are the 'customers'

e-Repositories - the many uses in academia

If you feel you can contribute or know somone who should get on stage and present, please get in touch. We are also looking for case studies for the above mentioned topics, let us know if you feel like sharing your success story with our delegates.

Don't forget we are on Twitter and you can follow our latest musing concerning FOTE09. To find out what other people are saying about FOTE09 simply use #fote09 in your tweets.

We are also planning to have our conference website up and running by the end of June, giving your more details about our speakers, the agenda and of course the chance to book your FOTE09 place.

June 2009 Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to the 3rd edition of this year's ULCC newsletter. We hope you like the new look, baby steps on the way to perfection. We have added a new 'Twitterverse' section on the left, giving you some tweets about ULCC, our courses, events and other things you might find interesting. Let us know what you think about it.

As some of you might know we are moving offices soon. The move is scheduled for late July / early August and we are looking forward to settling in to our new home in Senate House, only a 5min walk from our current office.

Our new address will be:

University of London Computer Centre
Senate House
Malet Street
London
WC1E 7HU

Tel +44 (0) 207 8631300

There is also great news about Barnsley College, one of our e-Learning customers, and their recent Ofsted visit, the overnight success of our Moodle Training Modules as well as last month's Digital Preservation Training Programme (DPTP) and the two Digitial Preservation Coalition scholarship winners. We have made some updates to our Managed Podcasting service and we are rolling out the improved version to existing customers as we speak. An official roll-out is scheduled for July.

We are proud to announce that Bodes e.HR has joined our growing list of co-location hosting customers from within the private sector. We have produced a case study that outlines our efforts in helping Bodes exceed their business goals.

Last but not least we can reveal more about FOTE09 and if you have heard about Mahara or e-Porfolios you might want to keep
July 15th free.

Best Wishes
Frank

DPTP at SOAS
Talking to the digital preservation crowd

As some of you might remember I have already joined my colleagues from ULCC at on of their previous Digitial Preservation Training Programm courses. (If not, no worries. You can catch it
here.)

This time I went back to speak to some of the students to find out what they thought about the course, as well as Patricia and Kevin, the driving forces behind DPTP's success. You can watch the interviews and a brief overview of DPTP on our multimedia section.

We also like to thank the Digital Preservation Coalition for their sponsorship of two students who attended DPTP. A panel of judges selected Grant Young, Digital Preservation Specialist at Cambridge University Library and Vicky Phillips, Digital Standards Manager at Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / National Library of Wales from a strong shortlist. The full article is on the DPC website.

I managed to speak to William Killbride, Executive Director at DPC, a few days after the course in May, about the DPC's involvement with DPTP, the reasons behind the scholarship and the challenges of digital preservation. The full interview is available on our dablog.

Ofsted praise &
First ever Mahara UK conference

Our e-learning team were thrilled when Barnsley College's Ofsted monitoring visit produced "the best college Ofsted AMV report awarded nationally to date". ULCC customised the e-ILP plug-in for Moodle to dynamically operate with the college information systems and replaced a paper-based system of learning plans, targets and reports.

You can find out more about ULCC's e-ILP module and how it helped Barnsley to significantly improve in developing a consistent tutorial programme across the college that is effective in driving learner progress and achievement in our
case study.

We are also happy to announce the first ever Mahara UK conference, the first ever in Europe for that matter, to be held in London on July 15th. Together with Catalyst, one of the founding partners of the Mahara project, we will bring together experts, practitioners, and providers of learning and training to share knowledge and best practice. To find out more about the conference and how to book simply visit our
event page.

The first Moodle Training Modules have been delivered and it seems we are up to something. All four modules booked out within days and we are working on a long term training schedule for the coming months. We know London is not the closest port of call for everyone. If you'd like us to provide in-house training at your organisation, why not
get in touch with our team? I believe there are few places left in the UK they haven't been yet.

You are receiving this email because you opted in at our website (www.ulcc.ac.uk) or signed up at a conference (JISC, UCISA, RSC events) we exhibited at. There is also a chance you signed up for FOTE 2008 or one of our iTunes U & Podcasting seminars and we offered to stay in touch.
