November 2009Dear <<First Name>>
It has been a while since our last edition in August and a lot has happened since. Firstly we moved office and you can now reach us at the address displayed in the footer of this email.
On top of moving 70 staff as well as supporting the relocation of other University of London departments, we also held the 2nd annual Future of Technology in Education conference, welcoming 300 people from across the UK.
There has been a lot of talk recently about the concept of shared services in conjunction with a survey by JANET(UK) and University of Derby. Since its completion in 2006 capacity utilisation at ULCC’s purpose built data centre has been growing consistently and we are now running services for close to 100 clients; providing, amongst others, a secure and stable IT environment to support Virtual Learning Environments for more than 250,000 students across the UK.
ULCC's e-Learning service continued strongly over the summer months and making sure the ever growing customer base was all set and ready for the new term becomes evermore challenging. Like last year we are holding Moodle Wonderland, this time and the brand new Westminster Kingsway College campus near King's Cross.
The Digital Archives team held another successful digital preservation training course and our repository experts had a few long days at the office, delivering the latest EPrints repository for the School of Oriental and Advanced Studies (SOAS), Fuerer-Haimendorf online collection.
We hope you enjoy this edition and as always welcome your feedback.
Frank
FOTE09 300 delegates, streamed into Second Life and 1500 tweets on the day
These are just some of the impressive numbers about FOTE09.
Our venue of choice this year was the Royal Geographical Society, a great space with plenty of character and all mod cons that you would expect from a high-quality conference venue.
Tim did a fantastic job, getting an impressive range of speakers from both the commercial & educational sectors to speak at FOTE09. We tried to stay true to the original purpose of the conference set up in 2008; namely bringing practitioners and experts from 'both worlds' together to discuss the challenges & trends impacting the academic sector over the next 1-3 years.
We have made all videos and slides from the conference available online, so sit back and enjoy them.
Moodle Wonderland Get ready for magical Moodle moments at Westminster Kingsway College's new campus
This year's Moodle Wonderland will continue to explore the future of VLEs and their role in supporting teaching and learning. Increasingly we hear talk of VLEs becoming redundant, but isn't the death of the VLE a little premature? Wonderland is not writing any obituaries, we're in the mood for Moodling. Come along and network with the ULCC Community, listen to some great speakers, attend exciting workshops which explore the role of VLEs and the Personalised Learning Environment.
Digital Preservation Training Programme We go international at ULCC's latest instalment of DPTP
With attendees from across the UK as well as Germany, Portugal and the Republic of South Africa we not only had the most international mix of students to date, but also welcomed the highest number of students this year onto the autumn instalment of our DPTP course.
DPC scholarships
This time around the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) provided six fully funded scholarships so that DPC members could attend the DPTP course. In a recent interview William Kilbride, Executive Director at the DPC, reinforced the coalition's commitment to the DPTP, stating that with "a persistent need for digital preservation training and [...] growing expectations of what digital assets can do for organisations and individuals, there will be sponsored scholarships in the future."
Bruno Longmore, Chair of the DPC explains the doubling of sponsorship places compared to last year by saying: "Given the clear evidence of demand and given how hard it can be to find other sources of support we decided to take the unusual step of funding three additional places."
DPTP feedback
We have spoken to some of the DPC scholarship winners and other students of the DPTP course. You can watch the interviews on our website.
DPTP Outlook
Slightly exhausted but happy all went down well, Patricia Sleeman, ULCC Archivist and project manager of the DPTP course reflected on what the future might hold.
"We are currently looking into making parts of the course available online to reach a wider audience. The latest course showed there is a growing interest worldwide and we do know that not everyone interested in the course, can afford a trip halfway across the world." Creating an e-Learning version of the DPTP course isn't the end of it and it seems there is more to look forward to in 2010. "Considering the varied backgrounds and feedback from our 2009 courses, we are exploring options to develop sector specific half or full day courses as well as providing tailored in-house training."
