TEDxTO Talk Released: Imagining 2017 and why it starts now

Hi <<Name>>

I'm working with the Institute of Public Administration of Canada to host the first major conference this March in Ottawa to begin imagining and planning Canada's Sesquicentennial in 2017. If you need an idea of the magnitude of this anniversary, it's basically akin to running two or three concurrent Olympics — for a year. So it's a big deal and its going to require a lot of work if we want it to turn out better than the snooze that was Canada's 125.

Back in September I was asked to give a talk about what we can learn from 1967 and what it means to 2017 at Toronto's TEDx event. They've finally posted the video and I wanted to send it your way.

Basically, we're running this conference to help 'seed the clouds' — to get people thinking about talking about 2017.

It's more than a bit embarrassing sending around a video of yourself. I get this. But it would help me out if you sent it along to your networks of friends and colleagues who you think might be interested — both in the opportunity that 2017 represents and the conference in March.

Many thanks,

Peter

From the talk:

“It wasn’t government that led the way to 1967, it was citizens. It was the millions of Canadians who staged community events and initiatives, from a bathtub race in British Columbia to launching a small festival in Toronto called Caribana. Across the country, people came together to celebrate their different ideas about Canada and what it could become. And of course, so much of it was also just plain fun. The opportunity that 2017 presents is the same. It’s a chance for us to learn about ourselves and our country — to look back and to look ahead.”

“2017 may be the best opportunity we’ve got over the next decade to do some important work in this country. The stakes are high and now is the time to start imagining our future.”
