Called to be Free to Give God Thanks and Praise
Introduction
Psalm 95: The psalmist encourages followers of God to praise God with
thanksgiving and songs. He affirms God's ownership of creation, and the
place of humanity as his "flock." The psalmist encourages people to listen
to God's voice today and live in obedience and peace.
Today's Scripture: Psalm 95:6Come, let us bow down and worship him; let us kneel before the LORD, our
Maker!
How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?
Today's Reading
1Come, let us praise the LORD!
Let us sing for joy to God, who protects
us!2Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and sing joyful songs of praise.3For the
LORD is a
mighty God,
a mighty king over all the gods.4He rules
over the whole earth,
from the deepest caves to the highest
hills.5He rules over the sea, which he made;
the land also, which he himself
formed.6Come, let us bow down and worship him;
let us kneel before the LORD, our
Maker!7He is our God;
we are the people he cares for,
the flock for which he provides.
Listen today to what he says:8Don't be
stubborn, as your ancestors were at Meribah,
as they were that day in the desert at
Massah.9There they put me to the test and tried me,
although they had seen what I did for
them.10For forty years I was disgusted with those
people.
I said, How disloyal they are!
They refuse to obey my commands.11I was
angry and made a solemn promise:
You will never enter the land
where I would have given you rest.
Reflect
Reread 95:8-11. Sheep normally listen to their shepherd (John 10:4), but
this passage tells how God's people did not listen. The psalmist uses this
memory to call people to obey God "today." These verses may have been
spoken in a worship service by a priest or prophet. How can remembering
stories from your own spiritual life change the way you respond to God
now?
Pray
God of Grace, there are times in my life when I have failed to listen to
your call. Forgive me. Make me hear your voice in all aspects of my life,
that I may be your faithful servant. Amen.
