Called to be Free to Give God Thanks and Praise
Introduction
Psalm 8: This month's devotions will invite you to reflect on Scriptures of
thanks and praise. The Psalms provide particularly rich biblical resources
for thanking and praising the Lord. Today's psalm refers to God as a ruler
and describes how God rules by sharing power with human beings.
Today's Scripture: Psalm 8:1aO LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world!
How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?
Today's Reading
1O
LORD, our
Lord,
your greatness is seen in all the world!
Your praise reaches up to the
heavens;2it is sung by children and babies.
You are safe and secure from all your enemies;
you stop anyone who opposes you.3When I look
at the sky, which you have made,
at the moon and the stars, which you set in their
places—4what are human beings, that you think of
them;
mere mortals, that you care for
them?5Yet you made them inferior only to yourself;
you crowned them with glory and
honor.6You appointed them rulers over everything you
made;
you placed them over all creation:7sheep and
cattle, and the wild animals too;8the birds and the fish
and the creatures in the seas.9O LORD, our
Lord,
your greatness is seen in all the
world!
Reflect
God gave humans kingly "glory and honor" and power to rule. The language of
verses 5-8 recalls Genesis 1:26-28, which says that humans will rule over
the rest of creation because "God created human beings, making them to be
like himself (Gen 1:27). Many years after Psalm 8 was written, Christians
saw the full likeness of God in Jesus, and the language of 8:6 was used to
describe Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:27; Ephesians 1:22; Hebrews 2:8).
Pray
O LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world! When I look at
the sky, which you have made, at the moon and the stars, which you set in
their places, I am continually reminded of your glory. Thank you for the
gifts of your creation! Amen.
