Hello,
DVA's new twelve for Hyperdub is ruling our world, A-side track 'Natty' manages to deploy a bare-bones Soca variant that's primed for the party and yet incredibly heavy, making use of layered concrète-style atmospherics and a singular, absolutely deadly wobble-board riff that sets things off in spectacular style. 'Ganja' on the flip is just a peak-time killer, it's really clever sh*t yet never at the expense of dancefloor function. It's one of those twelves, like Artwork's 'Red EP', that we reckon will still turn heads a decade from now.
Over the years Deaf Center have been one of the biggest selling and most sought-after names in our catalogue, and this week sees the release of the gorgeous 'Retold' album recorded by their very own Otto Totland, together with British cohort Huw Roberts. It's a predictably lush affair, tugging at the heartstrings with cinematic productions augmented by strings, piano and widescreen arrangements. If you've followed the work of Max Richter, Johann Johannsson or, indeed, Deaf Center - you'll absolutely love this.
We have a very limited number of beautifully hand-packaged albums from Seasons (Pre-Din), an hour-long recording taking in layered drones and treated field recordings that we absolutely love, each one carefully housed in an oversized print and then covered by an outer sleeve handmade by the artist. Just 150 copies of this have been made, and there are a bunch of bonus cd's thrown in at random for the lucky among you, so don't hang about if you want one. Similarly bespoke and limited is another hand-packaged release, this time from Cotton Goods luminary Sub Loam. This one comes on individually printed postcards inside a stamped paper bag, and features two long tracks of ambient drone works and treated microsounds for followers of the mobeer/cotton goods axis. 110 copies only!
Obscure psych pop gems from 1970's Iran is the latest focus for the good people at Finders Keepers, delivering another immaculately conceived and executed selection of weird and wonderful music from a part of the world few of us have any cultural awareness of. Of course, this is the music of a pre-revolutionary Persia, making it all the more interesting as a historical social document of a world that really ceased to exist long ago, at least as far as the outside world is concerned. We love this album, our favourite Finders Keepers in a long time.
An absolute ruck of other stuff is out this week, including an amazing 90-minute cassette from BJ Nilsen and Stilluppsteypa, a split tape on Digitalis featuring previously unreleased material from the hugely sought-after Bugskull and a long new track from Eagle Altar, a side project of sorts of Altar Eagle - a name we promise you'll want to keep an eye out for in the months to come. Also out this week, Ben Klock and Illum Sphere mixes of Martyn, Thom Yorke remixing MF Doom, a limited twelve from A Made Up Sound, plus releases from D1, Werk Discs, Phoenix remixed by Animal Collective and Memory Tapes, Jose James, Starkey, Seabear, Posthuman, Prime Numbers and the absolutely MINDBLOWING compilation from Minimal Wave Tapes and Stones Throw.
Have yourselves a wonderful week....
Peace! nekkers.....xx

SEASONS (PRE-DIN)
Stars and Lights: Together We Fall
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
THY
CD // £7.99
*STRICTLY LIMITED HANDMADE EDITION, BEAUTIFULLY PACKAGED AND LIMITED TO A RUN OF JUST 150 COPIES* Following on from the wonderful 'Your Eyes The Stars And Your Hands The Sea' for the Type label, Seasons (Pre-Din) surfaces with another beautiful handmade editions, featuring half an hour of windswept environmental recordings, lost radio transmissions and phantom drones. There's an intangible feel to the Seasons (pre-din) sound, and you get the feeling that this could only be music conceived out in the wilds. The opening piece could almost be a doomy cousin to Richard Skelton's music, employing bowed drones that spill out clanging, metallic overtones while deathly radio static and weather-beaten field recordings bulk up the texture. Each track segues smoothly into the next, giving the sense that in structural terms this album functions as a single large-scale composition that's been divided into indexed movements, rather than a sequence of individual pieces. The second and third tracks seem to embrace a more lo-fi, eroded sensibility that takes you further into the realms of hazy detachment - by the fourth track it sounds as if you're stranded in a cave deep underground, with only the chattering noise of shortwave radio to keep you company. Spooky strings in the vein of The Caretaker emerge from the fifth section, and all the while that peculiar wind-like hiss persists. Ghostly pianos interrupt the flow, but we're soon thrust back into the disorientating soundscape of static, bringing the album to a close with a lost broadcast feel...

NEST
Retold
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Serein
CD // £7.99
We all know about Erik Skodvin's activities outside of Deaf Center - he's carved out quite a solo career for himself as Svarte Greiner - but what of the Norwegian duo's other member, Otto Totland? For the past couple of years he's worked as part of the duo, Nest, with Huw Roberts, releasing their eponymous debut EP in 2007 on Roberts' own Serein label. Now the two artists at last follow up that release with this wonderful full-length, which lifts its first six tracks from the EP (with one newly reworked) and adds a further five new compositions. Retold is something of a masterpiece within its field. Even on early inspections this record excels on every level as a piece of cinematic, ambient contemporary classical composition. From the writing, performances and sparing arrangements right down to the deeply atmospheric production this is an album that followers of cinematic score-work/modern-classical music will absolutely relish, combining memorable deployments of both melody and texture with a kind of scrupulous minimalism that never overplays its hand. 'Lodge' serves as an apt introduction to the album, setting out with muffled, bell-like piano phrases, pining horns and the gentlest current of strings, but by the time we arrive at 'Marefjellet' the duo have really hit their stride, conjuring suspenseful, filmic passages populated by rhythmic keying figures, deep, bass-heavy harps and vintage-style electronic processing. At times it's as if you're listening to a cross between Biosphere's Insomnia soundtrack and his album, Shenzhou, and in terms of ambient music, that must surely be regarded as a compliment of the highest order. Elsewhere, more abstract pieces arrive with the likes of 'Trans Siberian', where the influence of sound collage takes hold: early outbreaks of wintry drone merge with passing locomotive sounds, before an evocative mixture of coarse, filtered strings, fractured piano and field recordings start to flow. The previously unreleased material on the disc proves to be more than up to the task of following up the earlier EP tracks: 'Wheatstone' is full of immaculately produced, aloof romanticism, while 'The Helwick' takes on a blizzard-like feel with its musty, Deathprod-like approach to engineering. Possibly the most extroverted of all the recordings here is 'Far From Land', a composition that's just achingly beautiful as it builds up to a choral midway point that's guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention. Retold is sure to enthrall followers of Deaf Center's ambient audio-sculpting, but it's also bound to resonate strongly with anyone who follows the work of artists like Peter Broderick, Johann Johannsson and Max Richter too. Very hghly recommended.

VARIOUS / FINDERS KEEPERS
Pomegranates: Persian Pop, Funk and Psych of the 60's and 70's
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
FINDERS KEEPERS
CD // £9.99
We've been waiting for this one to drop for a while, collecting some of the most obscure, eye-popping electronic pop/funk/psyche recordings made in Iran in the 1960's and 70's before the revolution and the overthrow of the Shah. Finders Keepers once again manage to educate and amaze with a prime selection of mindblowing obscurities - the production on so many of the tracks here just beggar belief. The music reflects Iran at a time when it was undergoing massive change, partly due to the influx of Petrodollars and the pervasive influence of modernity which created a tension between mystical Eastern traditions and the freedom of socioeconomic development. These pieces are borne of multiple traditions indigenous and exogenous, sonically paralleling the psyche phenomena of USA and Britain, while retaining its own distinct Persian personality in songs rich in sonic innovation as well as wilful and ecstatic vibes. Unless you're of Iranian background or happen to be a seriously curious collector it's unlikely that you'll recognise the likes of Mohammad Nouri, Googoosh, Noosh Afarin and co, and tracks like Kourosh Yaghmaie's 'Gol-e Yakh' or the electric folk of Soli's 'Miravi' will be enough to make you want to start digging for more. Of course there's also a healthy helping of heavy funk here too, with the ornate licks of Noosh Afarin's 'Gol-e Aftab Gardoon' or the symphonic strings and snaky bass of Sima Bena's 'Naz Kardanet Vaveyla' designed to keep the more adventurous DJs with a heavy supply of exotic unknowns. Mindblowing stuff from Finders Keepers once again.

SUB LOAM
2
ELECTRONIC
DISSOLVING
CD // £7.99
*Hand-stamped, hand-numbered limited edition of 110 copies from Cotton Goods artist Sub Loam on the related Dissolving imprint* Last seen contributing an especially good release to the Cotton Goods label, Sub Loam (aka Thomas Shrubsole) now readies new material for his the bijou Dissolving label. Here, Shrubsole offers two long pieces of what he terms "landscape meditation and exploratory ambience". The 15-minute opening first track plunges your ears into a hauntological realm populated by suggestive sound cues and vintage sonic constructions to trick the memory. Throughout there's a continuous stream of tape hiss, with warbling, organ-like tones and plenty of booming, shadowy bass echoing around the stereo field in such a way as to present the illusion that there's something creepy and peculiar going on directly behind you, or just out of your field of vision. Following on from this, 'Grass And Soil, Rutted Track, A Mound Of Earth' proves even better, presenting a disfigured environmental soundscape that seems as if it's been committed to tape using the world's most unreliable and decrepit dictaphone. Fluctuations and rumbles in the consistency of the recordings add plenty of character, although the muddy, waterlogged sonorities still manage to come through, becoming less and less stable as we draw towards the end - something which results in overloaded, distorted noise and almost raygun-like pulsations. A far darker affair than 'In The Field', the analogue ambient treatments here offer a compellingly mulchy and nocturnal universe to immerse yourself in.

BJ NILSEN & STILLUPPSTEYPA
Space Finale
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Editions Mego
Cassette // £8.99
It may only be a few weeks old, but 2010 is already proving itself to be a strong year for drone records, and BJ Nilsen himself has already added to the tally with his freshly released The Invisible City, for Touch. Now, the Swedish sound artist reconvenes with long-term collaborators Stilluppsteypa for a follow-up to their rainforest-inspired dark ambient album Man From Deep River. After that very earthy, tropical nightmare of an album, this ninety-minute cassette release immediately sounds like music conceived on a higher plane. Divided into four lengthy pieces, this cassette has the feel of a classic piece of analogue experimentation, populated by obliterated field recordings, vintage synth timbres, archaic, blipping tones and above all, acre after acre of sustaining, continuous sound. It's hard to know exactly how this music came about, but if you scry long enough over these vast, smoky vistas you'll hear shapes (of some sort) starting to emerge. It's listed that the principal 'instrument' used in the making of this record was a Revox 2-channel tape machine, and the fact that the release is consigned to cassette means that the warm, magnetic character of the music is seen through right to the end. The classic, old-fashioned styling of the album contributes to the overwhelming ambiguity that hangs over proceedings; very few modern, digital drone records manage to achieve such an unshakable air of foggy enigma, and at its intangible best 'Space Finale' evokes a fantasy meeting between Delia Derbyshire and The Hafler Trio. Limited to just 200 copies, this cassette comes with our highest recommendation.

VARIOUS / MINIMAL WAVE
The Minimal Wave Tapes Volume One
ELECTRO / SYNTHPOP
Stones Throw
2LP // £16.99
The highly anticipated 'Minimal Wave Tapes' compilation of obscure synthwave essentials has arrived - and boy, it's completely floored us. As the label states, "This is the first official volume (available on CD, LP, and Digitally) of Minimal Wave music from Europe and America recorded in the 1970's and 1980s". Most of the songs were released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves with distribution limited to underground mail order tape networks, hence their practically unknown status in the much pored over history of post-punk and electronic music. Minimal Wave label owner (and co-founder of world-renowned East Village Radio station), Veronika Vasicka and Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf have done a hugely commendable job with the selection, plucking out some solid uncut gems and remastering them from their original analog source tapes for maximum authenticity, giving new life to a niche of music that we all kind of knew existed, but didn't have a clue where to start looking for. Tracks like Crash Course In Science's 'Flying Turns' sound like they could have been stamped with an early Mute Records catalogue number, the arabesque electro-goth of Oppenheimer Analysis' 'Radiance' sounds like a Throbbing Gristle offcut while the Turquoise Days' 'Blurred' recalls a raw Human League demo session. The deeper we delve, the more fantastic the revelations, giving up exceptional treats like the prototypical Dutch electro of Das Ding's 'Reassurance Ritual' or Ohama's dystopic procrastination 'My Time' while the raw scuzz of Esplendor Geométrico's 'Moscú Está Helado' progressively blows our tiny minds every time. All that remains to be said is if you love anything from DAF to Dopplereffekt, or from Cold Cave to Chris & Cosey, then this album is essential listening. KILLER!!!

LUIGI ARCHETTI
Null
ELECTRONIC
DIE SCHACHTEL
CD // £12.99
Best known for his work alongside Bo Wiget on the Rune Grammoon label, Swiss guitarist and sound artist Luigi Archetti here steps out alone for an album of uncompromisingly abstract electroacoustic music. This isn't the sort of easy-going, 'pretty' material you'd get from the current glut of home listening releases, but rather a challenging and rigorous brand of minimalist sound design. The album begins with three tracks totalling fifteen minutes of taut droning sonorities and intricate whirring textures. There's a compelling interplay between apparent stillness and dismantled, detailed timbres that keeps you hooked, right up until the fourth track, on which Archetti projects a deep, gong-like resonance that brings to mind some of Mark Wastell's tam-tam compositions. Similarly, the next piece involves a low, rubbing texture that sounds a bit like some mystery, heavy object spinning on a wooden table-top - this isn't music that ever feels the need to explain itself. Archetti's work thrives on this level of abstraction, and given how pastoral and atmosphere-fixated contemporary electroacoustic music seems to be getting - what with all the environmental field recordings you hear in ambient records these days - it's refreshing, and arguably more engaging to hear something that's all about sound for sound's sake. As a guitarist making these kinds of detailed, close-up pieces, Keith Rowe's work often springs to mind as a comparison, but in addition to the instrumental recordings (often made from E-bowed guitar), Archetti's sources also include the noise made by generators and the sounds produced from playing back blank video tape. A great collection from Archetti and another very fine Die Schachtel release.

EAGLE ALTAR / BUGSKULL
Split Cassette
ELECTRONIC
DIGITALIS
Cassette // £6.99
This extremely limited split-cassette release on Digitalis conforms to the usual levels of scarcity, pressed up in a preposterously small run, with just 60 copies available on these shores. The first side comes from Eagle Altar (aka Altar Eagle) the brilliant new projet from Digitalis Industries co-owners and husband and wife team Brad Rose and Eden Hemming Rose. The single, eleven-minute track they contribute takes the form of a totally genius fizzy drone drift backed by lo-fi. scratchy drum machines in the sold-wave tradition. It vaguely resembles an 8-bit rendering of the main theme from The Terminator, with probing synths embarking on melodic minor-key digressions while the icy drumbox hammers out a precarious vertebra for the piece. Just too good. Bugskull's contribution on the other side is entirely different in approach, offering more mysterious, miniaturised transmissions: 'Cloud Pile-up' sounds like a mellotron gone awry - it's a beautiful lo-fi globule of smudgy warmth, littered with tape pops and the static harmony. Next comes the strange, lullaby-like 'Furnace', whose sweetly twinkling keys and xylophone sounds are counterbalanced by a deep synth groan that evokes a monstrous snoring sound. The track finishes slightly threateningly with a wave of feedback scree, but final entry 'Night' is back into the domain of faded, memory-tapping lo-fi melodies that float by as if captured years ago on some battered C60 cassette that's already been taped over a hundred times. Nab one of these while you can...just so good.

DVA
Natty / Ganja
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Hyperdub
12" // £5.49
Hyperdub digs deeper into the UK Funky undergrowth to uproot two tribal-tek killers from DVA aka Scratcha packaged in a resplendent spot-gloss sleeve. There's been no small amount of commotion over this 12" from those in the know, receiving plays from Kode 9's inner circle - Cooly G, Ikonika etc and players like Oneman to Marcus Nasty and Jackmaster. The bare-bones soca-riddimic construction of 'Natty' is the perfect hush-up to any Funky naysayers who feel this style is a step in the wrong direction, craftily augmenting the dynamic production levels of European house and techno for ruder London-centric and Afro-Futuristic purposes. On the flip we get the equally potent strains of 'Ganja', a loose-limbed flex of jackin' polyrhythms with a lead synthline sounding like a mashed-up clanger who's just found some A-grade cheese. Just drop this in the right dance and watch the place go loopy. Together with Cooly G, the Deep Teknologi crew and the whole Night Slugs/Numbers axis, DVA is rewriting house music with a tropical set of reference points that are fully pushing our buttons right now.

MARTYN / BEN KLOCK / ILLUM SPHERE
Remixes 2/2
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
3024
12" // £5.99
Ben Klock and Illum Sphere complete the double-headed Martyn remix series with two sick revisions. The Ben Klock mix of 'Is This Insanity' was a prominent feature of the recent Fabric 50 mix, standing out from a very respectable crowd with a serving of prime-time Berghain techno functions offset by the loping flow of MC Spaceape. As always, Klock's production is built for the most cavernous techno temples with terrifying kicks balanced by agile percussion and the perfect amount of reverb to epic effect. We can see this becoming a real touchstone for the cross-fertilisation of dubstep and techno for years to come. Meanwhile on the flip Illum Sphere reworks 'Brilliant Orange', resculpting the 2-step rhythm to his own blueprint with a hardstepping effect softened by warm chords and that hazed sensibility that's marked the best of his gear. The Klock's a killer, watch out!

DOOM / DR WHO DAT? / THOM YORKE
Gazzillion Ear EP (Dr Who Dat? / Jneiro Jarel Mixes)
HIP HOP
Lex
12" // £5.99
*FINALLY IN STOCK, FEATURING THE THOM YORKE REMIX, INSTRUMENTALS, PLUS RE-FIXES FROM DAVE SITEK AND DR WHO DAT? - 12 TRACKS IN TOTAL!* Now shorn of the MF prefix, Daniel Dumille thankfully hasn't lost any of his dextrous verbal powers, sounding cryptic as ever over a beat from the late great Dilla and backed with rather special remixes from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Dr Who Dat?, and Jneiro Janel with TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek. The beat on 'Gazillion Ear' must have come from Dilla's very top drawer, a two-part classic starting with sirens and soul organs, before flipping to a Godfather-style baroque Farfisa. Thom Yorke's mix slyly slips the tempo up to a more urgent pace, matched by insectoid hi-hats and theremin-alike vocal tones, while Dr Who Dat goes the opposite direction with cosmic pressure system dynamics and a slappin' boom bap beat. Bringing up the rear, Sitek and Janel match Doom's off-the-grid flow to a dubbed Afro-beat backing with horn section, drum rolls and heat-haze guitars included.

Forever keeping heads on their toes, Werk Records dash this curveball from the brilliant Nochexxx and marmite MC extraordinaire, Sensational, into our path. We really don't know what the f*ck is going on with 'Smashing Your System', it's like a folder full of Philip Jeck, Throbbing Gristle and Anti Pop Consortium has been corrupted with live protein enzymes, resulting in one confounding bit of beaten oddness. 'Sinbliss' is a little easier to grasp, if a mesh of Belgian New Beat with swampy Dub subs and the most disjointed MC in the business is nothing out of the ordinary to you. A MADE UP SOUND
Sun Touch
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
A Made Up Sound
12" // £8.99
Dave Huismans aka 2562 unloads the second release for his A Made Up Sound imprint. Compared to the outright Detroit ebullience of AMS 001, this plate acts as an outlet for his more esoteric leanings, constructing three tracks that don't feel like immediate 'floor hits, but burn with a more cosmic and atmospheric abstraction while still driven by incredibly efficient and well-tuned rhythmic engines. 'Sun Touch' scopes the scene's minimalistic radar bleeps and Radiophonic synth textures carried by an itchy Shake-styled rhythm, while 'Drain' enters a sombre zone of hazy grey drones and spring loaded steppers rhythms for the more adventurous DJs. Finally 'Shortcut' gives time for some ruff drum machine experimentation harking back to his 'Archive' release for Clone's Basement series. He's still way out on his own, which makes each and every one of his records worth checking. Limited copies only.

D1
Jus Business
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
DUB POLICE
12" // £6.49
D1 makes a very welcome return with an outstanding new twelve for Dub Police. Shockingly, one of dubstep's most underrated producers has been off the radar since '08's seminal 'V3' album, but it's obviously been time well spent as the thunderous shock of 'Jus Business' makes clear. We roll in off the back of a tense, dialogue packed intro and into a maelstrom of cross-bred dubstep-hardcore styles, cherry picking the finest elements of 20 years of rave, from euphoric piano chords to face-melting mentasms and junglistic percussion twisted with a dubstep torque. This is what Rufige Kru should sound like if they were still building decent beats. On the other side we get the equally brilliant 'Pitcher', programming a flex balanced between Soca force and Funky swing at 140 bpm and guaranteed to make the dance explode at the right opportunity. Highly Recommended to fans of LD, Cluekid, Kode 9, and raving, hard!

RUDE KID
Jack Daniels EP
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
NO HATS NO HOODS
12" // £5.99
OH MY GOSH! Humongous movements from Rude Kid (with a little help from Terror Danjah) on quite possibly one of the sickest releases from No Hats No Hoods ever! This is instrumental grime of the highest calibre, featuring four full-strength cuts made to liven up any dancehall. The Bassline House-injected 'Jack Daniels' and the fierce garage raver 'London Town Remix' take the A-side by storm, while the lurching drums of 'Emergency' and the Terror Danjah assisted 'Beat Crawler' rule the flipside with an iron shank. We're not messing about here, this is the sickest grime 12" we've had in stock since TD's 'Industry Standard Pt.4' last year and you'd be an utter gibbon to miss out on it. Hugely recommended!

D-Bridge's Exit Recordings puts another foot right with two remarkable feats of D'n'B minimalism from Russian duo, Abstract Elements. 'Wrong Way' on the A-side crafts a hi-tech-stepper from Frank Bretschneider styled percussion and ultra-heavy yet agile subbass movements while 'Abysmal Depth' on the flipside marries stoically dark atmospheres with Alva Noto-esque steppers rhythms and a crafty tempo switch embedded in the breakdown. Fans of Raster Noton and recent movements from Kontext, Data or Instra:mental should be all over this!

PHOENIX / ANIMAL COLLECTIVE
1901 (Animal Collective Mix)
INDIE / ROCK / ALTERNATIVE
V2
12" // £5.99
Phoenix seemed to really cross over into the broader public consciousness last year with their marvellous Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix long-player, and '1901' was just one of the songs that made it so memorable. Amongst a tracklist that offers a raft of potential singles, '1901' remains a standout; a blast of pure Gallic pop joy that marries The Strokes' interlocking guitar genius with post-Daft Punk production traits that exude a peculiarly Parisian brand of what the French might call: 'I don't know what', but in French. The Animal Collective take on LP track 'Love Like A Sunset' is a delight all of its own, transporting the original to more psychedelic climes with its voice-looping electronics, processed Spiritualized-like guitars programmed beats. When AC start overlaying their own vocals, the mix flirts with sounding like a Beatles song lost in a dub echo chamber. It's very good indeed, but doesn't steal the limelight from that tremendous A-side.

Previously self-released in an ultra-limited run, Fauna's ambient black metal masterpiece, The Hunt now gets an official outing on the dependably bleak Aurora Borealis label. In addition to a fresh mastering job (courtesy of Mell Detmer, notable for his Earth and SunnO))) credits) the recording has been packaged in a black hand-silkscreened arigato pack with a hand-screened insert - and what's more, the album now features live drums! Megan Remy's U.S. Girls returns with a sophomore album for Siltbreeze, launching an assault on all standards of taste and decency within the sound engineering community by serving up one of the scuzziest, most smudged out, inky records of the moment. When first I heard Remy's work (last week), mentions of Grouper immediately sprang to mind, and that's certainly still the case, but while Liz Harris tends to use her...

Light Sounds Dark Records present a cult disco classic from LA synth-band Moebius (no, not the Cluster/Harmonia dude) originally released on Moonwind records circa 1979. 'Light My Fire' is an ahead-of-its-time cover of The Doors classic, giving it a thorough overhaul with throbbing arpeggiated bass and the sort of futuristic vibes that earned it a place in Beppe Loda and Danielle Baldelli's boxes back in the early 80s. The Ben Klock mix of 'Is This Insanity' was a prominent feature of the recent Fabric 50 mix, standing out from a very respectable crowd with a serving of prime-time Berghain techno functions offset by the loping flow of MC Spaceape. As always, Klock's production is built for the most cavernous techno temples with terrifying...

Shockingly, one of dubstep's most underrated producers has been off the radar since '08's seminal 'V3' album, but it's obviously been time well spent as the thunderous shock of 'Jus Business' makes clear. Fans of Raster Noton and recent movements from...

ABUCS
12" // £5.99

Scuba revives his Abucs imprint for a terrific installment from some unknown fella named Ation. On the A-side 'Lovers Dub' lifts the classic lyrics from soul staple 'Love and Happiness', deftly weaving them into a deliciously sparse 2-step riddim flecked with insectoid rhythmic skips and metallic technoid stabs. 'Love For The Heads' on the flipside may be the one that gives the game away however, sounding like vintage Abucs releases...

Philly's finest drops two synth-riddled riddims for Rwina. He'd have a hard job beating the chrome blazing excesses of the 'OK Luv' 12" so Starkey settles for two grimy productions here, from the ruffed-up halfstep swagger of 'Rain City' on the A-side to the stiffened syncopations of 'Beatingz' on the flip, both made for the dubstep rave DJs.

Taking its inspiration from the humble chicken (or 'niwatori' in Japanese), Masami Akita's tenth installment of his 13 Japanese Birds series comes in three parts. Apparently Merzbow-san has a bit of a fixation on this most common of barnyard fowl, naming the three compositions here: 'Niwatori Obsession 1', 'Niwatori Obsession 2' and 'Niwatori Obsession 3'. The tone set by the first track gravitates towards particularly extreme free-jazz and noise-skronk, with...

You may have previously picked up on Kevin Barker's work back when he was recording as Currituck County and playing sideman to Antony & The Johnsons, Vashti Bunyan, Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart. Now, Barker has called in a few favours from his Americana A-lister pals, recruiting a band that boasts members of Wilco, The Shins and Espers, recorded under the supervision of the estimable Thom Monahan. Barker has previously...

LAURA VEIRS
July Flame
Bella Union
LP // £16.99
|
|
|
For this latest album, Laura Veirs parts company with Nonesuch and opts for a self-release in the USA, via her Raven Marching Band Records imprint, with a Bella Union airing in the UK. Apparently (in Autumn 2009) The Decemberists' Colin Meloy has somewhat impetuously already declared the album his favourite of 2010, and while such statements might be a tad tricky to justify, it is (naturally) really good. After 2007's...

MIDLAKE
The Courage Of Others
Bella Union
LP // £15.99
|
|
|
Midlake's sophomore album, The Trials Of Van Occupanther was a surprise hit back in 2006, and the group's reputation only seems to have snowballed as the years have gone on. The '70s rock feel of that album seems to have been substituted in favour of British prog-folk as the central influence this time around however, and much like Espers, Midlake appear to revel in the sounds of Pentangle, Fairport Convention...

A collection of fairyland forest-folk miniatures played on zithers, bells and gamelan-like instruments, from no-wave legend Robin Crutchfield, ex of D.N.A. "Robin Crutchfield, the critically acclaimed performance artist, moved to New York in the '70s, only to cross over from art into music with his no wave band DNA, recording tracks for Brian Eno's historic "No New York" album. *FINALLY IN STOCK, FEATURING THE THOM YORKE REMIX, INSTRUMENTALS, PLUS RE-FIXES FROM DAVE SITEK AND DR WHO DAT? - 12 TRACKS IN TOTAL!* Now shorn of the MF prefix, Daniel Dumille thankfully hasn't lost any of his dextrous verbal powers, sounding cryptic as ever over a beat from the late great Dilla and backed with rather special remixes from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Dr Who Dat?, and Jneiro Janel with TV...

The always excellent Janek Schaefer returns to Sirr with another superb album, this time collecting the various commissioned compositions he's worked on during his first decade of activity, spanning 1997-2007. The title comes from the first piece on the disc, 'Alone At Last', which had been composed for a "symposium in Tasmania on the theme of isolation". After a flourish of tremolo chords we hear the sound of heavy rain...

**2010 Edition on Erased Tapes** After last week's amazing (and highly limited) Wintermusik disc for the Sonic Pieces label, Nils Frahm returns with a new album of solo piano improvisations. Broderick would say things like "Make...

Thrill Jockey
CD // £9.99
|
|
|
Baltimore denizen Jason Urick's output has previously been channelled through his WZT Hearts project, but on this new Thrill jockey LP he emerges as a lone entity, toting a studious, drone-centric line of compositions that's perhaps reminiscent of Jim O'Rourke's more avant-garde leanings, or even recent outings from Thrill Jockey labelmates Mountains. Over the course of four pieces Urick lulls us into an auditory realm that suggests a healthy working...

7" // £4.99

Previewing their forthcoming We Built A Fire album, Icelandic ensemble Seabear launch a new batch of material for Morr Music with this single, featuring two songs lifted from the LP. 'Lion Face Boy' underlines the band's firepower, livening up a wistful folk-rock jaunt with surges of anthemic brass. More than that though, this song shows a heightened level of songwriting maturity compared with previous efforts, something compounded by 'Cold Summer',...

BEACH HOUSE
Teen Dream
Bella Union
2LP + DVD // £14.99

|
One of the most hotly anticipated releases of 2010, Beach House's Teen Dream follows up the massively lauded Devotion, the album that saw this Baltimore duo reach creative maturity back in 2008. Since then the formula hasn't been tampered with too much, and instead Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand continue to pursue the spartan, hazy tenderness of their prior successes, but with a more developed ear for songwriting and a...

BARDO POND
Bufo Alvarius (2010 Reissue)
Fire
CD // £11.99
|
|
|
This was Bardo Pond's 1995 debut album, taking its name from the official Latin for a hallucinogenic toad indigenous to the Western United States. That's a fairly appropriate association to make with the band's severely zoned-out stoner-psych sound, something pioneered on this album, a record that brought the band to the attention of Matador Records who snapped them up for their next album. Amongst all the fuzz-soaked weirdness of the...

Dream Get Together is Citay's third album, and their second for Dead Oceans (having debuted for Important). JOHN VANDERSLICE
D.I.A.L.O.
Dead Oceans
7" // £3.99
|
|
|
The brilliant John Vanderslice releases this 7" in a run of just 100 copies for the UK, so it won't be around for long. He culls 'D.I.A.L.O.' from last year's Romanian Names long-player. It's one of his more electronic tracks but doesn't suffer for its lack of conventional songwriter tropes. Similarly uptempo is exclusive B-side 'Do What You Want', which has to be one of Vanderslice's most full-blooded rock tracks...

Sea Voids
Thrill Jockey
LP // £11.99
|
|
|
Pontiak's fourth album, Sea Voids, was written, recorded and mixed in eight sessions over the course of a three week period. Now, to me those sorts of figures are enough to set off alarm bells. How good can a record be that's had such little incubation time? Well, it's actually pretty solid, and that's probably largely due to the levels of spontaneity present in the album's conception. The guitar tones...

SCOUT NIBLETT
The Calcination Of Scout Niblett
Drag City
LP // £14.99
|
|
|
For her sixth album, Scout Niblett once again teams up with producer Steve Albini, resulting in a series of recordings that's perhaps even more spartan and bold in its arrangements than anything she's done before. Much of the album is pared down to just Niblett's own voice and a skeletal electric guitar accompaniment, but the tactic could hardly be more effective: the likes of 'Just Do It' and 'IBD' are...

THE DURUTTI COLUMN
A Paean To Wilson
Kooky
2CD // £13.99
|
|
|
Perhaps unavoidably, this new double-disc album from The Durutti Column isn't an entirely consistent affair, yet it almost certainly harbours some of the group's finest material in years. In fact, Vini Reilly's guitar has seldom sounded better, whether he's artfully traipsing though classical figures on 'Catos Revisited' or shredding through 'Requiem', he sounds like a man possessed. As far as negatives go, there's an ill-advised take on Marvin Gaye's 'What's...

DIRTY BIRD
12" // £5.99
|

|
Don Dirty Bird's Bootsy Collins collaboration from the 'Bird Brain' album takes remix treatments from Robag Wruhme, J. Philip and Dop. The Robag Wruhme rerub is the pick of the lot, using his many years of tech-house expertise to tease out a spatially enhanced and elastic tech-house version, while J. Philip provides a straight-ahead tech-house mix and Dop gets creative with fonkily looped percussion.

Planet E
12" // £8.99

Two techy house groove tools from Funky House inspiration Franck Roger on Planet E's Guilty Pleasures sub-label. The prolific Frenchman caters his style towards extended building club tracks here, with the stealthily uplifting 'Re-scape' on the A-side and the gradually shifting rhythm patterns of 'Re-Verse' on the flip, the type of stuff you'd expect to hear in club set between Carl Craig and Cooly G.

RYO MURAKAMI

DESSOUS
12" // £6.49

Laidback deeper tech house from Ryo Murakami backed with a remix from Graeme Clark aka The Revenge. Most attention will probably be on that remix from Mr. Clarke, cut deep and sensuous on the A-side to accentuate the luxuriant 110bpm tempo and classically informed disco elements. On the flip Murakami's original mix of 'Just For This' holds up well, while a more uptempo and funked up 'Untitled' cut shows he's...

1XA
12" // £6.99

The 1XA imprint delivers two cuts of raw but elegant Detroit and Dub house cuts from an unknown character. A-side track 'Impairment' revolves around a staggered kick drum and crisp percussion (benefitting from a seriously heavy cut at D&M) while filtered Detroit strings circle and form an uplifting coda. 'Reagent' on the flipside is a far murkier beast though, sounding like some rugged dub-house track squashed by Redshape and dragged...

Prime Running Back version of Luke Solomon, Zaki Dee and Rob Mello's highly sought-after 1995 EP for Prescription! The 'Unreleased Re-Edit' of 'Space & Time' dubs up the pianos some while giving the rhythm a ruffer shake, while the disco progressions of 'Prescription Every Night' (played by Carl Craig on his '95 Essential Mix) back it up. Crosstown Rebels hatch a strange-house plan from Luke Solomon & Justin Harris as Freaks, backed with a killer mutant Funky remix from Radio Slave! The Freaks original of 'Umakenosense' is a cool slab of grubby acid house schematics , building over the duration to a throbbing old-school Chicago style for 2010. But the real heat is all contained on the flip, as Radio Slave's 'Rekid Riddum Mix' takes the most...

Another selection from the Underground Quality archives, repressed copies of Jus-Ed's second ever release, the 'Getting Ready EP'. Here we can hear the real roots of Ed's rugged yet soulful style on the extended title track, jamming with skewed drum-machine patterns and an intuitively abstract melodic sensibility, while the flipside dives under a synth-rich blanket of heavy uptempo house music driven by strong kicks and a proper deep attitude.
