The Deity of Jesus
Part 1: The Word was God and became Flesh
One of the targets of both false religions and heresies is the denial of the deity of Jesus Christ.
Many use arguments saying, "Jesus never claimed to be God", "the Bible never calls Him God", and in this Apologetic Teaching our prayer is that you'd remember the places in scripture where...
Jesus does claim to be God
&
The Bible calls Him God & ascribes to Him deity.
Let’s being in the Gospel of John:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”
(John 1:1)
John then goes on in verse 14 to clarify who the Word is…
“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
(John 1:14)
In the 5th Chapter of the Gospel of John Jesus heals a man who had been ill for 38 years. As the man lay alongside the pool called Bethesda Jesus asks him if he wants to be made well and subsequently speaks to him saying, “rise, take up your bed and walk”. The Jews then respond upon seeing this miracle say to man who was healed, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful to carry your bed”, and because of that reason, verse 16 tells us that “For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.”
Jesus’ response and the subsequent response of the Pharisees not only show Jesus making another claim of deity & equality with God…. but the response of those who heard him demonstrates the controversy of His claim.
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
(John 5:17-18)
Making himself equal with God. (John 5:18b)
And this would make sense because in John 10:30 Jesus said,
“I and the Father are one.”
To which the Jews who were listening, responded by taking up stones to stone Him.
Their reason… in their own words…
“Because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God." (John 10:33)
