New Poll Demonstrates Vitter's
Continued Momentum

Vitter Leads Melancon 54% to 33%

Baton Rouge - On the heels of a decisive victory in the August 28th Republican primary where he received 88% of the vote, a new survey by Rasmussen reports shows Senator David Vitter leading 54% to 33% to Representative Charlie Melancon.

"Senator David Vitter's continued strong and commanding double digit lead demonstrates clear momentum," said Republican Party of Louisiana Communications Director Aaron Baer.  "Senator Vitter leads not only among all voters but among key constituencies including double digit margins among independents, women, and young voters.  Clearly Melancon's desperate and flailing negative campaign has backfired and voters are recognizing him as a big spending, big government, Obama enabling liberal."

Sen. Vitter Has A Clear And Consistent Advantage:

Sen. Vitter leads Rep. Melancon 54% to 33%. "A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state finds Vitter, who is seeking a second six-year term, earning 54% support while Melancon attracts 33%.  Five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate, while seven percent (7%) are not sure." ("Election 2010: Louisiana Senate," Rasmussen Reports, 9/1/10, link)

Despite Melancon's Negative Campaign, The Race Remains Virtually Unchanged. "These findings have shown little change since early January.  Since then, Vitter has earned anywhere from 53% to 57% of the vote, while Melancon’s support has remained in the narrow range of 33% to 36%." ("Election 2010: Louisiana Senate," Rasmussen Reports, 9/1/10, link)

Sen. Vitter Leads Melancon Among Key Constituency Groups:

Sen. Vitter Leads 2 to 1 Among Unaffiliated Voters. "Vitter is favored by 85% of Republicans, while Melancon only picks up support from 59% of Democrats.  Among voters not affiliated with either political party, Vitter leads Melancon 55% - 27%." ("Election 2010: Louisiana Senate," Rasmussen Reports, 9/1/10, link)

Sen. Vitter Leads By A Greater Percentage Among Women (56% to 30%) Than Among Men (53% to 36%). (Crosstabs - Louisiana Senate - August 30, 2010, 8/30/10, subscription only)

Sen. Vitter Leads Among Younger Voters 18-29 By A 52% To 34% Margin. (Crosstabs - Louisiana Senate - August 30, 2010, 8/30/10, subscription only)
