Do You Know the Secret?

Hi <<First Name>>,

Do you know the secret to life? To good health? To a long marriage? To happiness? To clear skin and no athlete's foot?

It's hard to turn on the radio or television, or even go to the movies, without seeing a commercial promise the secret to something. Truthfully, most of the answers you receive aren't secrets, they're just common sense. I think we're really looking for shortcuts and external solutions to internal problems.

I'd rather you give me five easy steps to good health than eat a balanced diet and exercise on a regular basis. Tell me how to fix my husband in seven days because that's simpler than working on myself. If it were really as easy as the commercials promised, we'd have long lives, happy marriages, gorgeous hair, and never get sick.

The real secret isn't a secret at all. It's relationship with God. Knowing Him and walking with Him makes our lives bearable. It doesn't make them perfect, nor does it make us perfect. I may never have perfect hair, a perfect marriage, or the perfect body, but I can have perfect peace, and that's enough for me.

From the screening room,

Christians in Cinema: Jim Britt

by Angela Walker

Jim Britts, writer and producer of To Save a Life, attended Biola University, where he obtained a filmmaking degree with an emphasis in screenwriting. But a summer internship made him realize his heart was in youth ministry, and he followed that passion. Two and a half years ago he combined the two interests and make a movie that would reach teenagers with a message of hope and healing.

What inspired you to be a filmmaker and when did you decide to go that direction?

Jim:  I went to Biola thinking that I wanted to be a broadcast journalist and be the next voice of the Sacramento Kings basketball team. My freshman year I had a radio show at Biola, and I hated living in this box, so I decided I didn't want to do that. I also took a screenwriting class my freshman year, and I loved it. So I came out of that class thinking I needed to change my emphasis and get into writing.

So my plan through my junior year was to live in Hollywood and...

Nichole Nordeman and Sweetpea Beauty

What was your favorite part of Sweetpea Beauty?

Nichole: If I had to choose one, I'd say my favorite scene is Sweetpea in the forest finding beauty in all sorts of unconventional things that might not be considered beautiful to anyone else. Her friend Prince Larry says to her, "How is it that you find beauty in everything?" And Sweetpea says, "I don't.  It's God who sees beauty in everything. I just choose to agree with Him." And I thought that was a great way to look at ourselves. God's the one who sees us as beautiful, and we can either choose to agree and say, "Thank you. I feel cherished and loved and I choose to believe that," or "I disagree" and work like crazy to improve on His work.

Dove Review: To Save A Life

Dove Review:
What would you do “To Save A Life”? This film offers a reality check to Christians and non-Christians alike who may be walking through life ignoring the dramatic issues that face our teens today.

Teen drinking and drug use are at all time highs in our society as are other social problems such as self mutilation, teen suicide and underage pregnancy. The filmmakers here offer a pragmatic look at the state of our youth and their problems. At times the situations in this movie are addressed in such a convincing way that the viewer may become uncomfortable as they see a friend or family member’s real life situations unfold before their eyes. The question is what would Jesus do and what will you do when faced with such stark circumstances?

While this film is a genuine view of teen life, the nature and depth of the content of the stories portrayed becomes slightly graphic at times. And yet, the movie has a strong message of spirituality. For this reason Dove has awarded its "Faith Based" seal with cautions about Sex and Drug use.

"This is an awesome movie, especially if you love the game, and love the underdog. Eddie, the caddy for Francis is absolutely charming. And Sheia does a great job of acting as young Francis. Although it is not a christian movie, it will touch your heart and you will go through every emotion possible and be cheering out loud by the end of the movie. Five stars all the way."

The Blind Side - DVD
The Blind Side - DVD

"A great movie and a true story makes it all the better. Some people can't see beyond the outward appearance and see the good in people. This is exactly what happens in this movie. If only christian movie producers and actors were of this caliber they could be advancing the kingdom of God. Great actors. I believe the real Toomies (spelling?) were a witness to these actors and have planted a seed for God. Keep a tissue handy while watching."
