This Week at the Movies

Hi <<First Name>>,

This week I saw three films that are all releasing in the next few weeks: I Can Do Bad All By Myself, The Informant!, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Though all three have a lot of comic elements, they are very different films, geared toward distinctly different audiences. I have to say my favorite is Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself.

It's his seventh film in five years, and is based on the first play he ever wrote, which introduced his pistol-packing Bible-misquoting character Madea. What I love about Perry's films is that he presents urban life just as it is. There are bad guys using people up, good people trying to make a difference, and people caught in the middle who think they can just live for themselves.

In a way, his films are like 21st century westerns. The bad guys get caught, the good guys come through in the nick of time, and there's a big block party (barn-raising) at the end. There are those who've been offended by his films, but they are out-numbered by those who recognize they're seeing real life on the screen.

I had the privilege of interviewing Perry and his co-stars by phone the other day, and those interviews are posted in our Movie News section. Go with me behind the scenes of his production and find out why so many stars want to be in his films, and what it's like to work with Tyler Perry (and Madea) in and out of character.

From the screening room,

Stage and Screen Actor Jason Hildebrand

Jason Hildebrand, a stage and film actor and corporate consultant from Canada, is also a loving dad to his daughters. Based in Toronto, Canada, Jason's work takes him around the world. A versatile writer and actor, some of his work requires him to portray as many as 23 characters in the same performance. Jason and I met at the Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival and immediately connected at a networking workshop. We sat down one afternoon to talk about the various facets of his work, being a father, and relating to our Father.

Emmy-award-winning filmmaker Dan Merchant got so fed up with the culture war that he donned a white jumpsuit, plastered religious and anti-religious bumper stickers all over it and traveled across America, interviewing prominent and not-so-prominent Americans about the culture war that has raged for decades between religious conservatives and their more secular counterparts. The result is Lord Save Us From Your Followers: Why The Gospel of Love Is Dividing America, a film that has been described by one publication as a cross between a Michael Moore and Monty Python film. The movie opens nationwide on September 25th and the filmmakers have set up a unique distribution system that allows individual groups to request that the film be brought to their local theater.

Our Daily Journey
Meditate: A Devotional from our Daily Journey
by Roxanne Robbins

We African Christians in general love the Bible. We love to own a Bible. We enjoy listening to preaching based on the Bible. We love to read tracts and booklets about the Bible. Sometimes we check out the Bible to pray a certain psalm or read a few verses that have been indicated to us in the course of a lesson, homily, or discussion. But few of us ever read the Bible on a regular basis as a Christian devotion. Why? So asks Nigerian-born priest Ernest Munachi Ezeogu.

Henry Poole is Here, Hopefully to Stay

by Angela Walker

Henry Poole DVDHenry Poole Is Here is one of the most powerful films about hope that I've seen in a long time. The power is in the myriad of small moments so meaningful they take your breath away. Remarkable also is the beautiful treatment of belief and its power to lift us up from despair to a place of hope. At one point in the film, Esperanza tells Henry that he's not looking at what others are seeing, and we realize that is true for us as well; sometimes when God is moving and we don't see it, it's because we're not looking.

Movie Review: I Can Do Bad All By Myself
5 starsby Angela Walker

I Can Do Bad All By Myself PosterOscar® nominee Taraji P. Henson is superb as Aunt April, a woman whose tough exterior and hardened interior are melted away and replaced with a heart open to love. Her leading man is Sandino, played by Adam Rodriguez (fans will know him from CSI: Miami), wonderfully cast as the strong, not-so-silent heroic love interest with a soft heart for April's niece and nephews.

The musical numbers from powerhouses Mary J. Blige, Gladys Knight and Rev. Marvin Winans are worth the price of admission. They deliver their songs and lines perfectly and you can tell they're performing from the depths of their heart and faith.

Perry promises that you'll laugh until it hurts, cry, and come away with a greater sense of hope and purpose, and he knows how to deliver in this story about love, family, and finding hope again.

While I Can Do Bad All By Myself is a great film about families, it is not for the entire family. Rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving assault on a minor, violence, drug references and smoking and alcohol use, it's not suitable for children under 13, as they'll probably be disturbed by the violence against the children and worried about their survival.
