Get Your Bearings
Hi <<First Name>>,
We're well into summer with days over 100 degrees, so on Tuesday mornings my friend and I swim outdoors. The water is cool and fresh and there's even a giant frog slide if I feel a little silly.
It's all good except for one thing. There's no ceiling. When I swim on my back, I'm looking up at a clear cloudless blue sky. It's great as long as I'm not trying to stay in a lane.
Invariably, after two or three laps, I hit lane markers and adjust by swimming sideways like a crab. Then after a few strokes I hit lane markers on the other side. I've even run into the side of the pool a couple of times. That hurt. The problem is there's nothing I can get my bearings from.
That's what James says doubting is like: not having any bearings because you're tossed and blown around like the waves of the sea. The good news is we can fix our eyes on Jesus, who restores our faith and keeps us on course.
Are you running into walls? Maybe you've lost your bearings and it's time to fix your eyes on something. A cloudless sky looks great, but it won't help you find your way.

Christians in Cinema: Rick Larson
by Angela Walker
For Rick Larson, a simple decorating project became his magnificent obsession. The attorney from College Station, Texas, spent months researching original documents and material to determine as best as he could the connection between The Star of Bethlehem, which he calls the "Celestial Poem of God."
Why research The Star of Bethlehem?
Rick: I think it was revealed to me. When I heard it, I knew I was supposed to take it to the world. I didn't discover this, it was revealed to me, and what God got out of me was doggedness.
Do you consider yourself to be in ministry? Did you plan it out in advance or was it something you found yourself doing? I feel sort of like I was tricked into this. I'm not complaining, but..

Tossing it Back - a Devotional from Our Daily Journey

by Tom Felten - Our Daily Journey
During a Major League Baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals last summer, a man named Steve Monforto caught a foul ball as he sat in the bleachers. Since fans are allowed to keep balls hit into the stands, Monforto handed the prize catch to his 3-year-old daughter Emily. But instead of treasuring the gift, she innocently tossed the ball back on the field!

Dove Review:
This documentary is fascinating and meticulously researched. Frederick A. Larson, a lawyer, became interested in the history of the star of Bethlehem, and did extensive examining of the facts. He relied on biblical texts, Jewish historians such as Josephus, and astronomers and constellation experts such as Johames Kepler and Copernicus.
Using astronomy software, he went back in time to the period in which the Eastern Star would have been viewed in the sky, and he began piecing together his findings. This DVD makes use of fantastic graphics and illustrations and sound teaching. The viewer may be shocked to learn some of Larson's findings, which solidify and do not contradict biblical teachings.
Larson illustrates how a star could be bright and stop over a specific location. He also attempts to narrow down just exactly what kind of star it was: A comet? A nova? He makes some interesting comments regarding the star known as "Messiah's Star." He concludes with some reliable scientific facts about the history of the stars during the time of Christ's crucifixion.
We gladly award five doves to this exemplary program.

"what a wonderful family film. Overcoming adversity. A mother who continued to inspire her sons to be diligent with their time. I believe that we all as parents or grandparents should consider "training a child" methods that this movie protrays. I truly enjoyed this film. "

Peter and Paul - DVD
by Mike Higgins
"A well done movie that was apparently done sometime in the 80s (?). It has some well known actors of today -some still around and some gone. The costumes and sets are very well done and it is apparent that the producers wanted to make sure it fit the period. It's interesting to see the Bible come to life through the actors and the story and how Christians suffered in trying to spread Jesus' messages. I recommend this movie for Bible classes and all Christians to see."
