He will be Missed...

by Tom Dorman
Executive Director

Once again, the mission family at Action Ministries, mourns the loss of a co-worker and dear friend. Lloyd Sandy passed away, Friday April 9th, from injuries he suffered in a fall. Lloyd started working at the mission over ten years ago and was loved and respected by everyone that knew him. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He and his wife Noma have given many hours of faithful service to Action Ministries and also to Trinity United Methodist Church. Lloyd has truly shown the love of Jesus Christ not just with words but with his life and service to others. We will miss you friend.

Dear children let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.
 1 John 3:18

Food for Thought

Food For Thought
is our program aimed at providing weekend food for those children within the Kenton County School District who do not have reliable access to food on the weekends. These are the children who depend on their free and reduced meals at school during the week but whose parents, for a variety of reasons, are unable to provide for them on the weekends. Action Ministries’ role is to secure funding, purchase and pack the bags. The Family Resource Coordinators at the schools identify the children and discretely deliver the bags to them each Friday.

This is an expensive program to run. Because we want to provide “kid-friendly” packaging with pop-top lids, we are paying a premium for these brand name products. Each bag costs about $5 per week for each student. The items are in packaging that does not require adult supervision and all can be eaten without cooking, if necessary. We include entrees, shelf-stable milk, fruit juice, applesauce, breakfast and lunch items and snacks. We are thankful that we have received sufficient support to provide for 96 students each week.

Feedback from the schools is very positive and Action Ministries is committed to continuing this program as long as it is needed and we are able to fund it. Following are excerpts from notes from some of the Family Resource Coordinators at participating schools:

~    “Thank you for volunteering at Action Ministries and filling the Food For Thought bags! The students who receive these bags look forward to getting them every Friday, and it is a great comfort for them (as well as me) to know that they will have food to eat over the weekends. I distribute the bags in a high school and so many of my students are used to fending for themselves. This program helps them realize that there are people in our community who care about both their nutritional and spiritual well-being. You may never meet the students you are helping, but please know that they are appreciative of your efforts and that this food is going to good use. It is feeding more than just their stomachs. Again, thank you for all you do!”

~     “I have two students at my school who get the program who live with their grandmother. She has custody of the children due to neglect by the parents. The grandmother barely gets by each month and reports the FFT bags have been a huge relief to her. Not only do they help her out at home, but they also put her mind at ease when the kids visit their parents. The kids take the bags with them to their parent’s house and that way she knows that the kids have food to eat during their visit. The grandmother loves the program.”

~    “One of my first grade girls that receive the program is homeless. Her family struggles to get by and her mom is doing everything in her power to take steps to provide her children with a better life. I typically deliver my bags while the students are at lunch but sometimes, due to schedule conflicts, I have to wait until they go to recess. When this little girl checks her backpack after lunch and sees that the FFT bag isn’t in her backpack yet she panics and comes to my office. This shows me the real need that the FFT program is meeting. Without FFT, this little girl would go hungry over the weekend.”

If you’d like to join us to help pack the bags, a group meets on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 at the Mission for this and other projects. If you’re interested, please call Sandy Banta (341-5179) to be sure of our schedule.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for a few “willing servants” to work at Action Ministries daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. We always need extra volunteers to fill in on days when we have a front desk or interviewing vacancy and help is needed in the warehouse to help fill bags and assist our clients.

Front Desk:    Checking in clients and checking ID.
Interviewing: Talking to clients and input data in computer.
Warehouse:   Work the line filling bags, assist our clients who are picking up food.

If you are interested in helping in either of these areas, please call the mission office at 261-3649 or Barb Dorman at 356-3522.

Kenton Elementary Helps Out Food for Thought

On a cold and rainy evening in January, about 80 adults and children gathered at Kenton Elementary for their first “Families Serving Together” program. Melody Simms, the Family Resource Coordinator at the school, organized the evening to give the children and their parents a chance to volunteer and help others in their community. Action Ministries was asked to participate by bringing bulk food out to the school so they could make up the Food For Thought packs.
Everyone was excited to learn about the program and help us fill the bags. In less than an hour, 200 bags were made for distribution within the School District. Additionally, the families donated about $65 to help purchase food for the program and at least one family joined the regular volunteers at the Mission on February 1 to make bags for the following month.

Letter Carriers Food Drive a Huge Success, Over 4,500 LBS Collected

We would like to extend a special thank you to our wonderful community, for giving so generously and to all the wonderful volunteers, at Action Ministries, Post Office employees and their family members who joined together Saturday, May 8th to help their community.

You made this food drive very successful. Action Ministries, grocery pantry, along with other community pantries will have the extra resources to continue to provide for those in need.

New Senior Program Offered

We are excited to have begun a new program this year. In January, we were asked by Northern Kentucky Area Development to distribute special government commodities to seniors in Kenton County through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (often known as the “Cheese Program”). If you know of anyone who meets the following guidelines and who could use about 60 pounds of food each month, please call us at 261-3649 and ask for more information.

Participants in the program must…
~   Live in Kenton County
~  Be at least 60 years old
~  Receive no more than $1174/individual each month from all sources, excluding food stamps

We have been given 215 spots to fill and as of this writing, we have 10 remaining available. After that, names will be put on a waiting list.
