Dear Chrys:

A new featured speaker, new panelists and new sessions have been added to the line-up for ONA10, the 2010 Online News Association Conference & Awards Banquet, Oct. 28-30, at the Marriott Renaissance in Washington, D.C.

About the schedule: This year, we're using an interactive event calendar from SCHED.org. Join us at the Friday Night Networking event for speaker Jonathan Harris, who makes inspiring projects that reimagine how humans relate to technology and to each other. Combining elements of computer science, anthropology, visual art and storytelling, his projects range from building the world’s largest time capsule (with Yahoo!) to documenting an Alaskan Eskimo whale hunt on the Arctic Ocean (with a warm hat). He is the co-creator of We Feel Fine, which continuously measures the emotional temperature of the human world through large-scale blog analysis, and has made other projects about online dating, modern mythology, anonymity, news, and language.

Jonathan rounds out a packed three days, officially starting with our Opening Night Reception, sponsored by Yahoo!, Thursday, Oct. 28, 7:30 p.m., at the stunning Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, Eighth and F Streets, NW, Washington, DC, 20001. Network, enjoy appetizers and an open bar in the museum's third-floor galleries, which house curated collections from the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, and leisurely peruse the stored collections in the climate-controlled drawers at the new Luce Foundation Center for American Art. In the works: a digital scavenger hunt. (Note: Event is open only to ONA10 registered attendees.)

Sessions just added:

  • News Apps: Showcase & Strategy: In this rapid-fire session, expert speakers, led by Katharine Jarmul of USA Today, show the journalistic and technical highlights from some recent news apps, providing insights into the lessons they’ve learned the hard way so you don’t have to.
  • From Facebook to FourSquare: Social Tools for Journalism: The hip new job is social media editor. The Wall Street Journal’s Zach Seward and his panel show you how those in the hot seat use social media to break news, expand the brand AND tunnel through pay walls.
  • Seven Deadly Sins of Data Visualization: Face it: if your data display doesn’t look good, it might as well not exist. Harness data visualization by being a smart producer and consumer of infographics.
  • DocumentCloud’s First Year: Aron Pilhofer, The New York Times, and Jeremy Ashkenas, lead developer of DocumentCloud, celebrate a birthday: DocumentCloud.org, now one year old, has impacted news stories big and small by making primary source materials easier to scour, annotate and share. A look at how the open-source project is approaching journalistic and technological hurdles.

Look for the tags: Under "General Session," a drop down lists sessions by tags -- tools, strategies and design-tech.

More fun stuff:

  • Camera Counter: Added to J-Camp: Play with (and purchase) still cameras, video recorders and audio equipment from Penn Camera.
  • How to Host an ONA Meetup in Your City: Want to hold an ONA meetup in your town or city? Already have, but want to learn how to do it better? Come and listen to ONA-DC divas Laura Cochran and Tiffany Shackelford talk about their successful events that not only showcase local talent but bring in sponsors. Saturday, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
  • Rebooting the News: Live: How does the emerging system of news work and what stands in the way of it working better? A live edition of the weekly podcast with Dave Winer, Jay Rosen and the ONA crowd. Saturday, 2-3 p.m.

Two events kick off the conference on Thursday, Oct. 28 — our hands-on, intensive Pre-Conference Workshops and the third annual Career Summit & Job Fair.

Pre-Conference Workshops: Roam D.C. with expert still and video photographers. Learn about open-source technology, data journalism, real-time coverage, web design trends and how to launch and grow your site’s bottom line and professional partnerships. These half- and full-day workshops are a true opportunity to get individual attention from top digital trainers and thinkers. Limited capacity, so register early.

Career Summit & Job Fair: The day starts with career training and tips from industry experts representing media and tech companies and organizations like Yahoo!, PBS.org. Hear about the latest trends in the job market from headhunters and professionals during panels and workshops. Most of all — get in front of innovative organizations that are hiring. Registration is free for ONA student members, $25 for all other ONA members; $50 for non-members.
