Wags

Summer weather has arrived. Sparrow has become a water dog playing in her puppy pool and swimming in the lake. Big sisters Phoebe and Lilly along with Aunti Grace have shown her how to leap off the dock but Sparrow is still doing her run to the edge, stop and submarine dive. She comes up paddling and seems to love every second. I know she will catch on soon and may be a candidate for a Dock Diving competition some day. I hope to get in the lake soon with my new wet suit for some conditioning for both the dogs and myself. This video shows her in her pool. It is becoming a challenge to keep it filled with her silly shenanigans.

Congratulations to our sponsors!

Spotlight on Rally Obedience
Attitude over precision. Relationship over perfection. Two phrases often attributed to Rally.

That does not mean you don’t see perfection on the course. We see it at every event. It just means the primary goal is for the dog to be showing a great desire to work with their owner and finding joy in doing so.

Rally Obedience is a fairly new dog spot. It was created by Charles “Bud” Kramer approximately 10 years ago from exercises often called “doodling” that were used to train dogs for obedience. Rally exercises resemble formal Obedience and run the gamut from a basic halt and sit or heeling to directed jumping, retrieving and the dog dropping into a down on a recall.

It is in the handling that the differences between Obedience and Rally show. Handlers are encouraged to talk to their dogs throughout the performance. They may offer encouragement and praise. In APDT handlers are even allowed to reward their dog with a pat or a treat in very specific situations on the course.

Rally draws a great circle of dog lovers who become good friends. We laugh, cheer and even have been known to offer the “wave” at ribbon ceremonies. Handlers bring their beloved pets, rescue dogs, Therapy dogs and Service dogs to compete. Some venues have special classes for junior handlers, puppies and veteran dogs. Exercise modifications are offered for dogs and handlers with physical challenges making it a truly accessible and very special dog sport.

As I say in each of my judges briefings; there is enough free stress in each of our lives. We should not pay for more in our hobby. This is about having fun with your dog. Great performance or great entertainment is of equal value in the end.

Wag It offers Rally classes and workshops as well as three APDT Rally trials per year.

Inspirations!
Two videos of one of my students, Nancy, working with her 10-month-old Field Bred Springer, Bella.

Running Contact training. Here Bella learns to run the length of the board without leaping. I utilize Sylvia Trkman’s Running contact methods

Jump Grid work (In collection): Bella is learning to look at the jump bars and judge distances. This will go a long way in her jumping efficiently, safely and successfully in the future. Notice the jump heights are not above. Running contacts. Here we are utilizing Sylvia Trkman's running method.
