This Week - 11June10:

Week's News:  This may explain a lot of our world, Why Change Is So Hard: Self-Control is Exhaustible (no matter how old!).   Women ruled politics this week, FIFA Soccer started today (so our family is glued to the set or watching outside on mobile devices!),  and seems like summer is really here finally - kids are out of school, weather is warmer.  Have a great weekend!

Socio/Geo/Political

What We Don't Know about the Flotilla Incident - City Journal 03June10:   An honest viewpoint of the situation - if you've read my postings on Turkey, you can see the pattern - as Turkey turns more Islamic, it has to be more confrontational with Israel and cannot remain 'cooperative' - it simply cannot.  Additionally, reports about starvation in Gaza are wrong - there are some with only 1 meal a day but if you are part of Hamas, you have plenty - the issues of food, shelter etc. are clearly tied to one's relationship with Hamas, not to embargoes.

Krauthammer - Those Troublesome Jews - Washington Post 04June10: But since when do facts make any difference?

China's Grip on Rare Metals (Not Pretty) - Business Insider 03June10:  Click on the presentation at the bottom of the article - any doubts???

Burma Seeking Nuclear Weapons - WashingtonPost 04June10: Who would have thought? Proliferation? No!  And who might be helping them? North Korea, Iran? Is any of this more of a threat to the world than the Flotilla and Gaza? And maybe whomever is helping Burma is helping Al Queda?

The Gulf and Potential Damage of Hurricanes - Business Insider 04June10:  I saw a chart on the expected path, without hurricanes, around Florida and up the east coast (going right by where I grew up on the Jersey Shore) finally turning out to see around MA and the Cape...this is just stunning, there are no words, and no money, to fix this.

Nigeria's Agony Dwarfs the Gulf's Spill and EU & USA Ignore it - Guardian-UK 04June10:  Ah, who cares about Africa.  Nigeria is a mess  on so many fronts - muslims & christians killing each other, raping the land of natural resources (and china moving in to do the same - see above), but this - the world really doesn't care. Let's face it.  However, the current issue of McKinsey Quarterly has some positive news on economic development on the "Dark Continent"

Nobody's Perfect, But They Were Good (Peggy Noonan) WSJ 05June10:   This is an amazing, wonderful, uplifting sign of humanity, of real sportsmanship, of taking accountability, responsibility and just plain great human behavior - wow! This is what kids should aspire to in sports (and just plain behavior!)

Myths about Solving World Hunger - ForeignPolicy - May/June10:  We want to believe 'green' is always good and better - but it's not - which is why some 'ecolites' don't like being bothered by real facts - but we need to know

Home Ownership is Over-rated by Richard Florida - WSJ 07June10:   Richard Florida always makes us think and he has some good points (good blog to follow too)...so many of my clients mention that their people are reluctant to move, and this was even before the recession.  There is a balance between stability - building a community, not wanting to move cuz the kids are in school, you've got fellowship etc., and new experiences.  But with the current economic situation, the home has become a ball and chain for so many.

Alien in the White House - WSJ 09June10:  Very interesting article...there are times I feel Obama is from another planet - let's just leave it at that

Biz/Innovation

One Hospital's Radical Prescription for Change - HBR Blog 02June10:  Fast Company and others have shown the 'hospital of the future' in terms of design (layout, color, etc.) and this sounds fabulous - it will be interesting to see how the financials play out - not just in the short but the long-term and if their management is willing to wait for long-term.

Wal*Mart Offers Employees College Educations - NYT 04June10:  So what is this? A way to stem employee turnover? yes.  A way to test the waters on getting into this industry? I say yes - they're into healthcare systems, other things - why not this? The quote I found fascinating is that if just 10-15% of employees sign up, it's the equivalent of 3 Ohio State Universities!!! WOW!

Netflix Wisdom on Netflix's Future & TV - Business Insider 04June10:  Reed Hastings has a unique, and so far very successful, perspective! Read and Learn.

Innovation Economy: Unleashing Intellectual Property - Talk by USTPO Under Secretary 02June10:  Sounds like the USTPO is getting it! HURRAY!!!!

GM Reinventing Itself? Yes - evidence? Giving Galarraga a Corvette and Investing $100M in a Tech Venture firm - 05June10:  Wouldn't it be terrific if a stuck in the mud, arrogant old industrial company could reinvent itself?  Ford has/is...and let's see if GM can too - that would be great news for America!

Arts/Music/Culture

Philip Glass Interview - Irish Times 28May10:  I, yes, I love some of Glass's works - esp. Koyaanisqatsi - regardless, he's an interesting chap!

Beethoven's Piano Sonata's Still Grip Us - WSJ 06June10:  I don't care if music snobs think Beethoven is provincial - I love his works - they do grip me, and I'm proud to admit that!

Technology/Science

How We Created the First Synthetic Cell - WSJ 26May10:  From the inventors themselves - they've been on the radio and tv - this is still astounding!!!

Is the Internet Making Us Smarter or Is it Making Us Dumber? WSJ - 05June10:  2 WSJ articles argue both viewpoints - what do you think?

Etc.

You Really Can Die of a Broken Heart - NYT 01June10:  Yes, apparently it's not just coincidence, it is real - you can die of a broken heart

Storming the School Barricades - A Sad story of Unions/Acorn/Etc. Keeping Status Quo - WSJ 05June10: What an incredible story - this is going on all over - fear of change, protect oneself, who really cares about the 'customer' - which in this case is our future!
