Monthly Maintenance Checklist for Your PC

By Marisa Moleiro

Normal usage of a PC will cause it to run slower for many reasons. Between saving information to your hard disk, downloading files, and even simply visiting websites, all of these activities create excess files that need to be purged every now and then.
I recommend the following list of maintenance tasks be performed on (minumum of) a monthly basis to ensure optimal performance. Of course, virus scans should be done weekly, or at best, daily, if you frequently download files:
  1. Run the Disk Cleaner - Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Select your hard drive (if it asks you to) which is 99% of the time your "C:" drive. Then when it displays the list of files to delete, (mostly temporary files), click OK and then Yes when it asks if you're sure.
  2. Run the defragmenter - Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Again, select your hard drive (C:) and click on the "Defragment" button.  Depending on the size of your hard drive, this could take 20 minutes to over an hour.  You can leave the computer alone while it's defragmenting, and just check it every 15 minutes or so to make sure that it doesn't go into "Sleep Mode" while it's processing. Give the mouse a shake or hit the spacebar a time or two.
  3. Run a virus scan. Depending on which program you have installed, the steps vary.
  4. Run Spyware and Malware Scans. There are free programs on the internet which you can download to perform these functions. Of course, be careful which one you choose because some of them can potentially be spyware or malware themselves. If you don't have Spyware or Malware software, let me know and I can recommend some trustworthy downloads for you.
