Green
is the new
Black

Sustainability is hot.  It has transcended its environmental roots and is now routinely the talk of the business world.  Any new product, process, or space design of any importance must have sustainability at its core.  And sustainability’s influence is widespread; the number of LEED accredited professionals has grown from less than 2,500 in 2005 to 130,000 today.  Consumers have changed, too.  Not content with just sustainable products, they’re reconsidering their buying habits, a process called principled, or ethical, consumerism.  As a result, products and their providers must mesh with the consumers’ own personal and social values.  When those stars align, consumers will pay a 20% premium for clean, green products over non-sustainable alternatives.  In terms of product design, the marketplace offers an array of sustainable products only imagined a few years ago; cell phones made from corn, biodegradable water bottles, it seems that every manufacturer has a “green” product available as consumer demand has caused a surge for these items.  With such focus on the demand for green, how do you as a businessperson wade through unsubstantiated or dubious environmental claims?  “Green washing,” the practice of companies disingenuously spinning their products and policies as environmentally friendly is common.  And then there is the simple issue that many business executives remain unconvinced that sustainability should be a core business strategy.  With the advent of “climate-gate” many feel that their ambivalence towards choosing green options for their business is justified.  Over the next several months we will highlight ways to evaluate green products as well as the positive effects of choosing “green” that make business sense because of they make dollars and cents.

Product Spotlight: Siento

The Siento chair is all about making you feel good - good when you look at it and even better when you're in it.  It’s not the same as other executive chairs out there, and here’s why…Siento has the “live” back technology created by Steelcase for the Leap chair.  This allows the chair to move with you and provides proper support as you change your position throughout the day.  So it’s an executive chair that acts like a task chair.  Siento’s elegance coupled with sophisticated comfort will have you smiling when you enter your office at the beginning of the day and when you leave it to go home.  And who knows, you may rethink the latter as you will be reluctant to leave the comfort of your office chair.  Sound unbelievable?  Why not give it a try?  Visit our showroom or ask for a demo test drive.
The Siento chair is level 2 certified to the BIFMA e3 sustainability standard and is also SCS Indoor Advantage Gold certified for indoor air qualiy.

John Pizzini
Celebrating 25 Years

Network Manager John Pizzini is our longest tenured employee.  He began his career with us 25 years ago when the office first opened in San Antonio and has seen the company evolve and change throughout its quarter century history.  “Wilson Business Products was an office supply company that opened in the 1900’s but grew to include furniture sales in the 1970’s,” states John.  “They had locations in Dallas and Houston, but opened an office here to be the service provider for USAA.  And for the first couple of years, USAA was our only customer.  Our job was to remove their old furniture and install new into their then four buildings.  The project was projected to last five years, but we completed the work in three.” During the project, John’s work ethic and empathy for customers made him a standout employee.
John quickly moved in a Service Management position and became an indispensable part of the Texas Wilson management team.  Five years ago John was asked to head up our Network Division, a position in which he coordinates all of Steelcase dealers and customers from around the country that ship furniture projects to be installed into the San Antonio and South Texas area, from small branch offices to 600 workstation projects.  When asked about his job, John states, “I am very grateful to be able to come to work and help our customers, especially in a crisis situation - especially when we are able to come through for them.  I think that any situation that you face, no matter how familiar you are with it, is challenging.  You can’t become complacent about anything, because some new development can always arise. But having long term customer relationships and knowing that you are able to perform for them is very rewarding.”  The national employee tenure average in the U.S. is 4.1 years, when asked why he has stayed with the company so long, John said, “What I like most about Texas Wilson, is the fun relaxed atmosphere and the camaraderie that we share.”  Whatever the reason, one thing is certain; we are fortunate and thankful to have loyal and dedicated employees like John.
