Quammen travels to research the fate of man-eating predators in dwindling habitats from the Carpathian mountains of Romania to Australia's Arnhem Land. Join others in an engaging and reflective discussion of the book led by Ben Goluboff, professor of English at Lake Forest College. Goluboff’s “razor sharp insights take one’s appreciation for the book to the next level” says one participant.

Fungus Among Us
The Chicago area is home to over 1000 species of mushrooms. Some of these are excellent edibles, others are poisonous, all of them play important ecological roles. Join mycologist Dr. Greg Mueller on a mushroom hike at Ryerson Woods to see some of this fungal biodiversity and learn about the fascinating world of mushrooms. Mueller is the vice president of Science and Academic Programs at Chicago Botanic Garden. Children ages 8 and up welcome.

Jerry Weber, President of the College of Lake County
Tom Hahn, Executive Director of the Lake County Forest Preserve District
George Ranney, President and CEO of Chicago Metropolis 2020, will moderate.

Seeing Well in Nature
with National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore
Shoot side-by-side with legendary National Geographic photographer and author of the new book RARE: Portraits of America's Endangered Species, Joel Sartore, in an intensive photography workshop at Ryerson Woods. An engaging day of lectures, critiques and hands-on outdoor field assignments, this workshop is about tackling the “big three” found in all successful nature photographs: good light, deliberate background and compelling story.
