Greetings from Compass!
We hope this message finds you well. This will be the first in a series of newsletters that we plan on sending out regularly to members of the Compass Community. Following the successful completion of the first year of the Compass Fellowship at Georgetown University, we are busy expanding to The George Washington University, American University, and Indiana University. We feel confident about the success of the Fellowship thanks to the hard work of our campus advocates. We have been working all summer to establish strong presences on those three new campuses while maintaining our strong presence at Georgetown.

In addition to the work we have been doing to expand Compass nationally, we have also been doing much to raise funds and revamp our social media platforms. We will be staging fundraising events around the country, including Washington, DC on August 11th. With the generous support of the Prudential Foundation, we will soon be receiving a renewed $50,000 grant. In our efforts to spread the word about Compass and excite people about what we are doing, we have boosted our online marketing efforts. Become a fan of our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter, and watch our video on Vimeo! We look forward excitedly to the next few months and we hope that we can continue to count on your enthusiasm and support!

Sincerely,

The Compass Staff

Fall 2010: The Compass Fellowship at Three New Campuses

Excited with the success of the Compass Fellowship program at Georgetown University, our team has spent the year expanding the program to three new campuses where the fellowship will take root this fall. Two campuses, George Washington University and American University, will be added to our DC regional hub, and a new Midwest region will open its first chapter at Indiana University. The expansion team is excited to see the program develop some new flavors at each of these schools and to witness how the DC region in particular will collaborate to make each campus Fellowship more effective.

FELLOW SPOTLIGHT

Sina Cherazi

Born in Northern California, Sina Cherazi made the decision fly across the country to attend Georgetown University and came across the Compass Fellowship during his first week on campus. Sina quickly took to the Compass community and found the experience unlike any class or extracurricular.

“Throughout all the modules, mentor group meetings, and one-on-ones, I don’t think I can recall an individual aspect of the fellowship that I found most indispensable. What I received from my Compass experience was much more than that.”

Sina had a passion for finance, but he soon realized that a career path leading straight to Wall Street did not necessarily motivate him. Sina considered what he knew about himself: he was passionate about the finance industry and his Persian heritage instilled in him an affinity for the Middle East. After extensive reflection, he had it: a student-led public equity fund that would invest in the Middle East while enabling students to gain extensive knowledge about finance.

He started the Zeeba Investment Group with a focus on the Qatar Stock Exchange. He soon partnered with another Georgetown student, David Greek, to create a company that would deliver educational and cross-cultural opportunities to students through investing. In the process, the two believed that Zeeba could even play a role in bridging the gap between Georgetown’s main campus in Washington, DC and its satellite campus in Doha, Qatar.

Sina is excited to hit the ground running with Zeeba Investments and believes that the Compass Fellowship played an integral role in helping him to get there. “I can talk in circles for hours about all the things I enjoyed during my Compass experience. To save you the time, I would just have you know that the experience was indeed remarkable. Passionate university students across the country deserve such an opportunity to learn, think, and grow. Most of all, the selflessness and eagerness of the Mentors fueled my inspiration for my venture and the program. If those Mentors can foster that same sense of passion within future Compass leaders, I envision exponential growth for the Compass dogma – and I would do whatever possible along the way to facilitate that growth. I’m proud to be a Compass Fellow.”
