MonkeyWrench Newsletter from MailChimp
Hi <<First Name>>,

It's time for another MonkeyWrench Newsletter. Lots to catch up on since we last wrote...

Anti-Spammer Goes Ballistic
How to Prevent This From Happening To You
One day two years ago, Mark Mumma got an email from Cruise.com. He never asked for that email. He got very, very angry (to say the least). He didn't trust the email, so he didn't click the "unsubscribe" link. Instead, he contacted Cruise.com and threatened to sue them. Some things were posted on Mumma's anti-spam website (photos of Cruise.com owners, accusations, etc). Cruise.com fought back and took Mumma to court for defamation. Mumma counter-sued. The story is jaw-dropping. To date, Mumma has spent around $75,000 of his own money.

We've got the email that started it all. Could a more credible design have prevented this from happening? How are your welcome or followup emails designed and written?

Blocked By Email Firewalls?
How To Tell If You're Blocked, And What To Do About It
These days, companies are getting so much spam, they can't keep up. So they're totally outsourcing their email to vendors like Barracuda, Postini, Symantec, and others. That's good for IT people, who can spend less time dealing with spam, and more time helping employees with real tech problems. All this means you need to know when an email vendor is blocking your (or your clients') messages, and you need to know how to get un-blocked.

Case Study from Paris
One of our customers from Paris wrote in a nice story about how they use MailChimp. It's a great case study about how a small company is helping local restaurants in Paris with email marketing. It's creative, and slap-your-forehead-simple. I especially love the story because they're not just helping restaurants get more business---they're helping people eat healthier food.

Outlook 2007 Rendering
There's been a lot of news lately about how Microsoft changed Outlook 2007, and how it's going to impact the way HTML emails are rendered. Long story short, they're going to use Microsoft Word to render HTML emails in Outlook 2007, rather than Internet Explorer 7. That's a huge change, but so far, this doesn't really look like it'll impact your designs. The stuff that Word won't support (CSS-positioning, DIVs, and other fancy-schmancy stuff) wouldn't work reliably in HTML emails anyway. A lot of designers are asking, "Why the heck would they do such a thing?" In a nutshell, Microsoft wants to make it easier for Outlook users to create their own HTML emails. Speaking of rendering issues, we're curious. How much do you test your email campaigns before you send them to your list? Are you paranoid, and send a couple dozen tests over and over till you get it perfect? Or are you confident in your code, and just click "Send" on your first draft?

Take our survey, if you have a second (there's a prize drawing). We'll post the results when we have enough data.

Flying Monkey and Gorilla pod
Every issue of the MonkeyWrench, we draw one lucky subscriber's name from our list, then send some kind of kooky, monkey-related gift.
Congratulations to James from SAP! Since you're in the UK, we won't be trying to ship you a 20 pound box of banana candy. Instead, you'll be receiving a flying slingshot monkey (to shoot at your co-workers), and a Gorilla Pod camera tripod (to take pictures of you shooting the monkey at your co-workers).
