| Who creates social responsibility? |
| Welcome to the fith Ethical Investment email from PIC Global. |
|
'The roles of actors in society are changing. What the world is facing today is not merely local or national problems, but rather global challenges that need to be addressed jointly. As we are all affected by environmental issues it is in the best interest of everyone to work together. In many cases the state has taken on the responsibility to remedy societal problems, and it still plays an important part in doing so. However, civil society and businesses are becoming increasingly influential in this field.
As companies gain greater economic and political leverage, the role of businesses in the global society is a topic for discussion. Social responsibility of businesses in fact goes beyond increasing its profits. |

Traditionally corporate social responsibility, CSR, is the belief that corporations have not only a financial but also a social responsibility. CSR should have a broader perspective and may take many forms, from local community-based charity to controlling the value chain in global operations or reducing carbon emissions. Serus believes that businesses in cooperation with civil society also play a vital role for regional labour market responsibility, a vision in which all actors in society share the responsibility for social inclusion.
More than ever society needs active entrepreneurs, fiscal incentives, and confidence and trust in business. Society needs a public climate in which entrepreneurs are appreciated not just for making a good profit but also for making a fair contribution to addressing certain societal challenges. Social responsibility has to be a common shared issue between every market participant. People want to take part and contribute to society. Therefore empowerment is needed for social responsibility and the protection of democracy'.
