Dear <<First Name>> :) We hope that this most recent edition of our ezine for the digital economy finds you well :) Creative directors give overwhelming support to Dublin’s first Portfolio Night More than 20 creative directors in Ireland have signed up to review portfolios in a speed-dating style setting for the first Portfolio Night on Thursday May 20th. Portfolio Night is the world’s largest simultaneous advertising portfolio review event, and next week will be held in 40 cities around the world. In Ireland it is also a rare opportunity to pull both creative directors together and the emerging creative community together. This is the first year that the event, devised by ihaveanidea.org, takes place in Ireland. Hosted by Ogilvy in Dublin, the participation of so many creative directors means that based on a 3:1 ratio more than 60 students, emerging creatives and freelancers will get to have their portfolios reviewed. Cloud solution for apps that fall far from the tree As any non-iPhone smartphone owner will know, just because an app is available on one device doesn’t mean it’s immediately available on every device. However, a Waterford-based company, FeedHenry is to take away the pain felt by developers and companies having to start over every time they want to develop an app for a different platform. FeedHenry is a spin out company from Waterford-based research institute, TSSG (Telecommunications Software and Systems Group) and is a pay-as-you-go cloud solutions provider of business applications for smartphones and social networks. Read more... Twitter conversation that led to creation of six new jobs A chance Twitter conversation is responsible for the creation of six new jobs at the online business directory Whatswhat.ie. Paraic Hegarty, a Cork-based investor and managing consultant has been appointed Director of Strategy and Innovation at the company. Hegarty ended up investing in the company as a result of chatting over Twitter with Sian Phillips, Financial Director of Whatswhat.ie and an active Twitter user. His investment is to result in five new jobs as well as his own hands-on role in the business and the opening of a new office base for the company. Read more... New media marketing innovation more popular with foreign-owned companies The most common form of marketing innovation carried out by enterprises according to a recently published Central Statistics Office survey was new media. The Community Innovation Survey 2006-2008 is a survey of innovation activities of enterprises in Ireland and other EU Member States, jointly conducted by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and Forfás in Ireland. According to the survey, just one in four of all enterprises (27%) carried out a marketing innovation between 2006 and 2008. The larger the company, the more likely this was: marketing innovation was introduced by over one in three medium and large enterprises in the same time frame. Read more… Local quality content providers to contribute to advertising effectiveness An association has been formed to promote the value of local quality online content in Ireland. The Association of Online Publishers Ireland (AOP Ireland) has been established to represent Irish digital publishing companies that create original, local, branded, quality content. According to the association, there is an immediate requirement, not currently being addressed, to promote the particular value delivered by publishers that provide local quality content through a trusted online environment. The association, founded by irishtimes.com, independent.ie, RTÉ.ie and entertainment.ie, aims to ensure advertisers and the public clearly understand the differences between various online activities and the benefits that members of the association provide.
