Welcome to the 7th edition of Service Worx e-newsletter.
Northern Try a Trade The Northern Try a Trade was held in May 2009 at the Broadmeadows Town Hall, in Melbourne’s north. It provided a range of hands on activities in trades and occupations where there are skills shortages in the region. The event was open to schools right across the area and targeted Years 8 and 9 students before they make those important choices for further study as they approach VCE and VCAL or even apprenticeships and traineeships. Over 850 students took part. There were many activities at the try a trade and the services sector was well represented with hands on activities in hairdressing and beauty, commercial cookery and coffee making. These were delivered respectively by the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE, Victoria University and The Bean Alliance, a local coffee supplier. The try a trade was organised by Local Community Partnerships, Career Connections and Banyule Nillumbik LLEN, and the Regional Industry Career Advisers from the Australian Industry Group. The Northern Try A Trade was generously funded by the six municipalities in the region as well as the Northern Workplace Education Network; a local group training company, Apprenticeships Plus, the Australian Industry Group and Industry Training Australia.
Quotes from some of the students included: “Not interested in cars – I want to do hair-dressing and fashion in the future.”“Sushi-making was good because you got to eat it.” “Enjoyed the coffee machine – it had many options and I won a prize.”

2009 NRA Young Retailer of the Year Competition
The NRA Young Retailer of the Year, entering its 36th year in 2009, is designed to recognise and reward excellence amongst young retailers under the age of 25. While previously the Young Retailer of the Year competition was a part of the Rewards for Excellence Gala Dinner, the competition will now host its own stand alone event allowing Young Retailer finalists to hear from and network with some of Australia’s most prominent retail figures. The competition gives young retailers the chance to exhibit their retailing skills and have those recognised not only by their peers but also by the wider community. Young Retailers are nominated by their employer for entry into the competition. Through the judging process, entrants are asked to demonstrate and utilise their retail skills and knowledge to showcase their understanding of, and vision for, retail through submitting a personal/career overview and a Store Improvement Plan which requires them to choose an area of their store that they felt required improvement and develop a plan that would result in increased performance and benefits for the store/business. From these initial entries, the Finalists are chosen by the judging panel and go on to compete in the final stage of the competition which involves a final interview with the judging panel before delivering an oral presentation during the Young Retailer of the Year Finalists Lunch. The Young Retailer Finalists Lunch features each Finalist delivering a presentation on a selection of retail-related topics which gives the finalists a chance to share their thoughts and visions for the retail industry. The Young Retailer of the Year winner will be announced at the conclusion of the finalist presentations and Young Retailer Lunch on 23 July at the Sheraton Four Points in Sydney.
