Mildura VCAL Student Wins VIC State Award

Tamara Marshall, a former student at Sunraysia Institute of TAFE, has been awarded a VCAL Student Achievement Award for Koori Student Achievement at the 2008 Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Achievement Awards. The award was presented in Melbourne recently by Bronwyn Pike, Victorian State Minister for Education.

VCAL is a major component of the Victorian state government’s strategy to keep more young people engaged in education and training. It focuses on practical learning, and prepares students for apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment, as well as further education and training.

Commencing VCAL in the Koori Unit at Sunraysia Institute of TAFE, Tamara enrolled in Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) for her Industry Specific Skills unit and quickly developed a passion for cooking. Tamara began an Australian School based Apprenticeship (ASbA) in the 2008 rotational Hospitality ASbA program, originally developed by the Regional Industry Career Adviser (RICA), in association with Sunraysia & Murray Group Training, the Mildura Local Community Partnership (LCP) and Sunraysia Institute of TAFE. Through this program Tamara gained valuable training and experience at a number of reputable local eateries.

In addition to her achievements through her school based apprenticeship, Tamara also made a valuable contribution to class activities and projects. She helped plan the Sunraysia TAFE VCAL student trip to Melbourne for the AFL Indigenous Round at the MCG, and organized a fundraiser barbeque to help cover the costs. Tamara also single-handedly planned and catered the Sunraysia Institute of TAFE Koori Unit’s Dulka Yuppata Day, providing lunch for over 50 people and displaying pride in her Koori culture with several indigenous dishes.

Tamara has previously received deserved recognition for her cooking ability, winning the 2007 Murray River Culinary Challenge. Run by LCPs along the Murray River in Victoria, this is an annual cooking competition for VET Hospitality students in secondary schools in those regions. Tamara also won the VET/ASbA Hospitality student of the year at the Mildura LCP/RICA sponsored 2008 Mildura VET in Schools Student Excellence Awards, and a Sunraysia Institute of TAFE award for her 2008 VCAL studies.

Tamara is now fully employed as a 2nd year apprentice chef at a Mildura restaurant, and is well on the way to achieving her long term goal of working in Melbourne to broaden her skills, and developing her knowledge of indigenous foods.
