INTERCEPT Platelet System Succeeds in 3-Year French Study
A large retrospective analysis performed by the Etablissement Français du Sang (EFS) of Alsace, evaluated the transfusion of over 13,000 platelet components treated with INTERCEPT. The study just published in the journal Transfusion, compared hemovigilance data before and after the implementation of pathogen inactivation into routine practice. The use of INTERCEPT treated platelets resulted in a decrease in the incidence of adverse events without impacting either platelet or red blood cell utilization.

France Reports First Autochthonous Cases of Dengue and Chikungunya
Ministry of Health officials have confirmed the first locally acquired cases of Dengue and Chikungunya.  Meanwhile, German researchers have reported a case of Dengue in a traveller returning from Croatia.  The range of the Aedes albopictus mosquito vector has expanded northward into Europe enabling these infections and creating the theoretical possibility of larger outbreaks.  Much like last month's report of autochthonous West Nile Virus in Greece, these incidents confirm the emergence of mosquito-borne tropical viruses in Europe.
