  • Presented by the Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges & Universities, the two-day conference, “Teaching and Learning the Hudson Valley: Building Capacity for Place-Based Education,” will be held at Vassar on November 13 - 14. Keynote speakers will include Peter G. Brown from McGill University; Congressman Maurice Hinchey from New York's 22nd Congressional District; and John Cronin, the director and chief executive officer of the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries. Fall of the Berlin Wall Anniversary Event

The 20th anniversary commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This day of activities, organized by the German Studies Department, includes a display of posters, films, and computer programs on topics ranging from children's culture and education in the former GDR to the chronology of the fall of the Wall, the reunified Germany.

Transnational Queer Lecture by Charles Batson

"Queer/ing Québec," is the topic of the lecture by Charles Batson of Union College, presented as part of the Transnational Queer: Genders, Sexualities, Identities lecture series. Through a focus on the play "Being at Home with Claude" by René-Daniel Dubois and its film adaptation by Jean Beaudin, Batson proposes a reading of Québec as a Queer space.

Herbstessen Feast

Hosted by the German Studies Department, the annual Herbstessen Feast features fabulous Würstchen (sausages), Kartoffelsalat (potato salad), and Kuchen (cake). In addition to the German cuisine, there is music and merriment. Advance $7 tickets are available at the table in College Center on Monday or are $9 if purchased at the door.

Launch of Community Works Campaign
Contribute Online

Support Community Works, the philanthropic campaign whose mission is to provide financial assistance to local not-for-profit organizations. Funded by donations from employees and students of Vassar College, Community Works has funded 40 different institutions in the Hudson Valley since its inception in 2001. Recipients are selected each year by a committee of staff, administrators, faculty, and students. This year the ten recipients are: Battered Women's Services, Celebrating Community (John Flowers), Children's Media Project, Circles of Planned Parenthood, Dutchess County Arts Council, Dutchess Outreach, The Living Room, Queen's Galley, Real Skills Network, Inc., and Rural and Migrant Ministry. Once again, any donation above $25 automatically enters you into a raffle to win the campus parking spot of your choice for the 2010 calendar year.

Exhibition: Inaugural Gowns from 38 US First Ladies

An exhibition of reproduction inaugural gowns of First Ladies, from Martha Washington to Roslyn Carter. The gowns were researched at the Smithsonian Institute, then designed and fabricated by Philadelphia dressmaker Dina Arzt in 1975 for the 1976 US Bicentennial. Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center, 9 Vassar Street, Poughkeepsie. On view through 12/5. Monday - Friday, 10am-4pm. Free.
