Modfest: Teen Visions, Words, and Sounds
Palmer Gallery
5:00pm

Opening of the annual exhibition that features more than 130 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs by over 60 students of the Art Institute of Mill Street Loft. An artist reception is followed by a performance in the North Atrium by Stringendo and the Capella Festiva Treble Choir. There are also poetry readings by high school students who are alumnae of Mill Street Loft's PASWORD and Project AWARE empowerment programs. This is the first of 30 Modfest 2010 events. The exhibition, Teen Visions '10, is on view through Wednesday, February 3.

Art Center Exhibition Opening, Symposium, and Reception
Taylor Hall, Room 203
5:30pm

Vassar College faculty speak on works in the exhibition, At the Heart of Progress: Coal, Iron, and Steam since 1750, Industrial Imagery from the John P. Eckblad Collection, from their specialized viewpoints. Participants include James Challey (physics), Diane Harriford (sociology), Dan Peck (English and environmental studies), and Michael Hanagan (history). Following the symposium, guests can tour the exhibition and enjoy refreshments in the Art Center atrium. At the Heart of Progress is organized and circulated by the Ackland Art Museum of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with funding provided by the William Hayes Ackland Trust. The exhibition is generously supported at Vassar by the The Friends of the Frances Lehman Loeb Exhibition Fund and will be on view at the Art Center through March 21.

The Catharine Street Community Center celebrates its 19th annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast with guest speaker, Jacqueline Proctor, deputy commissioner and communications manager of the West Virginia Department of Culture & History. The event serves to recognize and salute those in the community who work toward King's goals and ideals. Mid-Hudson Civic Center,  14 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie, 7:15am. Tickets for the breakfast are $35.

The Vassar Haiti Project's Emergency Relief Initiatives for Earthquake Victims
The Vassar Haiti Project's emergency relief initiatives for earthquake victims includes the collection of emergency relief supplies (medical supplies, clothing, hygiene items) with boxes placed in dorms and other campus buildings; tabling by the VHP in the College Center through the end of the month; and monetary donations to help defray shipping costs and to go to immediate needs of VHP's artists and gallery owners who live in and around Port-au-Prince.
