Lecture by Rob Scharpf, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Susceptibility to common diseases such as cancer and diabetes is influenced by genetic variation. Two forms of genetic variation are particularly common and can be assessed on a genome-wide scale using recent high throughput genotyping arrays: single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number variants (CNVs). Told through slides and discussion of the iconic knitwear collection of the Ohio Knitting Mills, Tatar presents a colorful and playful timeline of the Main Street fashion that emerged in America after World War II. A selection of rare, original knitwear pieces from the legendary Ohio Knitting Mills archive, dating from 1944-75, will also be presented to examine first hand. This male gray/brown/black Miniature Poodle/Shih Tzu mix of six pounds may be anywhere in the Vassar College area. Gullaby and the Roellke's Springer Spaniel went missing at the same time, but Jeter, the spaniel was found yesterday on Route 44. Gullaby should have been with him, so the Roellke's are worried that Gullaby was either hit by a car or (hopefully) someone took him in. All help is greatly appreciated and the Roellke's are happy to provide a reward for anyone that is able to return him to the family. Community Works Campaign Support Community Works, the philanthropic campaign whose mission is to provide financial assistance to local not-for-profit organizations. Funded by donations from employees and students of Vassar College, Community Works has funded 40 different institutions in the Hudson Valley since its inception in 2001. Recipients are selected each year by a committee of staff, administrators, faculty, and students. This year the ten recipients are: Battered Women's Services, Celebrating Community (John Flowers), Children's Media Project, Circles of Planned Parenthood, Dutchess County Arts Council, Dutchess Outreach, The Living Room, Queen's Galley, Real Skills Network, Inc., and Rural and Migrant Ministry.
