McAdoo, a geologist who studies earthquakes and tsunamis, noted that he will focus on "Why a Magnitude 7 earthquake would kill over 200,000 people in Haiti, while, in 1989, an earthquake of the same magnitude hit a similar-sized urban population in San Francisco and killed 'only' 63 people." Modfest Foreign Film Screening Foreign Language Resource Center, Chicago Hall 8:00pm "Zerkalo / The Mirror," Andrei Tarkovsky, director (1974). This Russian film never had an official premiere and had only a limited, second category release with just 73 copies. Its complex yet simultaneously simple structure makes "The Mirror" one of Tarkovsky's most difficult films, as well as his most personal. Lecture by Alice Pung Rockefeller Hall, Room 200 5:00pm "Educating the Peril: a history of teaching Asian Australian History and Literature." Alice Pung was born in Melbourne, Australia, to Cambodian parents. She is a non-fiction and fiction writer, journalist, and playwright. Thursday, January 28 Lecture by Erik Fossing Nielsen Taylor Hall, Room 203 4:30pm "Outlook for the World in 2010: Exciting, with Risks!" Erik Fossing Nielsen P'12 is Goldman Sachs' Chief European Economist and Managing Director responsible for the firm's economic research teams for Europe, Russia, Middle East and Africa. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1996 as a senior economist for Russia. He transferred to London in 1997, to build the economic research team for the New Markets in the European time-zone, and in 2005, took over responsibilities for Western Europe as well. Before joining Goldman Sachs, Nielsen worked in Washington, DC, for 10 years, first as an economist at the IMF's European Department and later for the World Bank as a senior economist for Russia and in other roles. Before leaving his native Denmark, he worked as an economist at the central bank and taught at the Copenhagen School of Economics and Business Administration. Waterman Bird Club Lecture Freedom Plains Church Arlington The Waterman Bird Club presents the lecture, "Intrepid Traveler in Birdland," by Harvey Sprung, who has for the past three years undertaken a journey through natural places in all 50 states and much of Canada. His bird photography has been featured on the cover of "Green Times" and in two centerfolds in the past year. A poet and photographer, Sprung shares his poems, pictures, and insights into birds and natural places and the people who preserve them. He will also highlight some gems in the world of North American birdwatching.
