Lecture by John Kelly

John Kelly, professor of anthropology at the University of Chicago, discusses "Asia and World Baseball." He addresses how Asian professional baseball teams have dominated recent global competitions and how much of the world the World Series actually involves. Kelly is a scholar of social and cultural theory and an anthropologist of South Asia.

Each Tuesday this month at noon, an engaging member of the Vassar community will share their personal experience and interpretation of a work of art in the Art Center's permanent collection.

Alex Krieger '95 Memorial Lecture by Frank Rich
Students' Building, Second Floor (MPR)

Author and award-winning columnist for the "New York Times," Frank Rich delivers the Alex Krieger '95 Memorial Lecture. Rich has written for the "New York Times" since 1980 as the chief drama critic, an Op-Ed columnist, a senior writer, and the front-page columnist. He also received the George Polk Award for Commentary in 2005. This annual lecture series is given in memory of Alex Krieger '95, who had a keen interest in works of distinguished American writers and humorists.

Claflin Lecture by Robert Storr
Taylor Hall, Room 203

Artist, curator, and critic Robert Storr presents his lecture, "In Real Trouble." Storr was appointed professor of painting/printmaking and dean of the Yale University School of Art in 2006. He has been a contributing editor at "Art in America" since 1981 and was the first American commissioner of the Venice Biennale in 2007. He is currently the consulting curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Sponsored by the Art Department, the lecture is presented as a part of the Agnes Rindge Claflin Lecture Series.

Reading by Mary Gaitskill

Author of two novels and three collections of short stories, Mary Gaitskill is the 2010 writer-in-residence at Vassar. Nominated for a National Book Award, her novel "Veronica" (2005) was a "New York Times Book Review" Best Book of the Year and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. The author's stories have been published in "The New Yorker," "Harper's," "Esquire," "The Best American Short Stories," and the "O. Henry Prize Stories." Gaitskill was also a Guggenheim fellow in 2002.

Interfaith Community Candlelight Vigil for Haiti
Chapel, Main Chapel

Representatives from a wide variety of different faiths offer prayers for the victims, survivors, and aid workers in Haiti. The program also features an organ music performance by "Bridge Music" composer Joseph Bertolozzi '81. The interfaith community candlelight vigil for the victims and survivors of the Haitian earthquake is sponsored by the Dutchess County InterFaith Council and the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life at Vassar College.

Lecture by Anne Parmenter

Mount Everest climber Anne Parmenter highlights the importance of team work in reaching the summit. Before climbing Mount Everest, Parmenter had climbed Mount Blanc in the French Alps, Cotopaxi in Ecuador, Mt. McKinley in Alaska, Ama Dablam in the Himalayas, and Aconcagua in Argentina. A certified top rope site manager, Parmenter works part time as a rock-climbing guide and is the head field hockey coach and assistant women's lacrosse coach at Trinity College.

Activities include student tabling, an interactive art project, a student panel discussion, and a celebratory dinner and recognize and celebrate how religious and spiritual life is part of social and academic life at Vassar.

Annual RSL Day: Communal Art Project

"BIG Art" is dedicated to giving students and community members skills in making public art and transforming local communities. This year features the creation of a BIG Art scrapbook to provide a visual outlet for responding to instances of suffering around the world, and for navigating the sentiments of empathy and altruism. Jay Mead, a Vermont-based artist, educator, and activist who has worked with Bread and Puppet Theater, serves as artist-in-residence for the project.

Sing Sing prison chaplain Petero Sabune '77 facilitates a student panel discussion on self-expression and community engagement. The panel addresses such questions as, "How are these pursuits in creative tension? How do they converge? What inspires you and sustains you in pursuing them? What inhibits you?"

Late Night at the Lehman Loeb Third Anniversary Celebration

In celebration of the third anniversary of “Late Night at the Lehman Loeb," the Art Center offers a special evening centered around "reasons why I love the Lehman Loeb." Grab your camera or one of the disposable ones from the Art Center and take pictures of what you love most about the Lehman Loeb. The pictures will then be assembled and shared on the Art Center Facebook® page. In addition, there are performances by six a cappella groups in the galleries, as well as birthday cake and refreshments in the atrium. Late Night at the Lehman Loeb is made possible by the generous support of the Jane W. Nuhn Charitable Trust.

"Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease," is the topic of a lecture by Dr. Margaret C. Sewell of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She discusses causes, diagnosis, and potential new treatments of Azheimer's Disease and reviews prevention studies, along with current treatments, in order to highlight everyday changes that can decrease the chance of getting the disease. Performance and lecture by ReadNex Poetry Squad

The ReadNex Poetry Squad, comprised of the spoken-word poets Decora, Free Flowin, Jarabe Del Sol, Latin Translator, and DJ H20, perform as part of a tour for their new album "Day Before Sound." The artists, who aspire to educate their audience on various cultural topics and current events, create a fusion of poetry and the rhythm of hip hop, which gives them a unique sound. Night of 1,000 Shorts
Chidren's Media Project

The "Night of 1,000 Shorts" is a community film screening event that showcases videos on the theme of "Connections." Videos featured in the screening have been submitted by Hudson Valley filmmakers of all ages and curated by the Children's Media Project staff. Audience members have the chance to nominate their favorite film for an "Audience Award." The event also offers drinks and hors d'oeuvres.
