Thursday, January 21 Modfest: Teen Visions, Words, and Sounds Palmer Gallery 5:00pm Opening of the annual exhibition that features more than 130 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs by over 60 students of the Art Institute of Mill Street Loft. An artist reception is followed by a performance in the North Atrium by Stringendo and the Capella Festiva Treble Choir. There are also poetry readings by high school students who are alumnae of Mill Street Loft's PASWORD and Project AWARE empowerment programs. This is the first of 30 Modfest 2010 events. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March for Social and Economic Justice Poughkeepsie Marchers gather at 9:00am for songs and speeches inside Smith Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church (124 Smith St.). They then leave the church to walk to the County Office Building (22 Market St). Special guests are the Dutchess Antislavery Singers. The program includes Arlington High School's Jazz Machine, the District Select Chorus, the Arlington High School Step Team, and performances by students from Overlook Primary and LaGrange Middle Schools. (click here to return to local events list) General Announcements The Vassar Haiti Project's Emergency Relief Initiatives for Earthquake Victims The Vassar Haiti Project's emergency relief initiatives for earthquake victims include the collection of emergency relief supplies (medical supplies, clothing, hygiene items) with boxes in placed dorms and other campus buildings; tabling by the VHP in the College Center beginning 1/20; and monetary donations to help defray shipping costs and to go to immediate needs of VHP's artists and gallery owners who live in and around Port-au-Prince.
