The LightPost | US Energy Sciences | 2010 Newsletter
US Energy is excited to announce the success of the first major installation of LED cooler/freezer fixtures, from our MullionStick product line.  Coolers and freezers probably represent one of the most optimized operating environments possible for LED’s and they also present one of the best possible financial investments for a retailer running refrigerated displays.

If you happen to find yourself in St. Louis, MO, a pleasant 40 mile cruise eastbound, will take you to Highland, IL, where you’ll find a Schuette’s SuperValu and aisles of cooler/freezer cases with beautifully illuminated products on display.  Frozen produce, dairy products etc., absolutely sparkle, with bright vivid colors inviting shoppers to put them in their cart, as they pass by.

The look and feel of this spotlessly clean store is now enhanced by the eye-popping illumination of the refrigerated displays, which by the way, is sure to increase sales.

Mullion lighting for refrigerated cases represents one of the most valuable enhancements a food retailer can undertake.  Maintaining the lighting in coolers and freezers has always been problematic for grocers because of the very harsh environment they create for the traditionally used fluorescent products.  They are expensive to replace, expensive to operate and short-lived compared to LED cooler/freezer case lighting.

The two biggest knocks on LED’s are their expense and susceptibility to heat failure.  But, because maintenance is such a high-cost component of keeping up refrigerated cases, the 3 to 5 times longer life expectancy and their much lower operating costs, make considering LED’s financially compelling.  Plus, LED’s absolutely thrive in cold temperatures and usually exceed their operating specs in every category. Additional cooler/freezer lighting problems such as lumen depreciation, procurement difficulties, storage challenges, and simply bad looking displays, also become a thing of the past.

LED’s have long been a target product line of interest for US Energy.  We are also aware of the myriad of products already available that are simply not ‘market-ready’ and can end up a costly nuisance, rather than a viable solution, for an end-user.  Not so with cooler/freezer lighting, as our warranties are sure to be long out-lived by the performance of our MullionSticks.

So, if you happen to be in the vicinity of southern Illinois, please take time to visit the SuperValu in Highland and don’t be surprised if you feel a strong impulse to purchase something in their very pleasing store, especially if you’re in the cooler/freezer case area.

Reflector Material is imperative to a fixture’s efficiency because it can increase its efficiency by 50% by freeing trapped light. This permits fewer lamps per fixture and ultimately reduces lighting operating costs by as much as 50% more.

Much of a fixture’s functionality is attributed to the reflector, and the value of the reflector is deemed by the quality of the material and design in which it is composed. We inventory 3 different types of reflector materials; White Aluminum, Enhanced Aluminum, and Specular Aluminum. The reflector material is composed of anodized or painted aluminum for higher reflectivity, or aesthetic appeal.

Reflectors almost always can be used interchangeably between fixture types, though some are more ideal for certain applications over others. They can be maintained easily and conveniently by simple dusting (a woolie duster works really well).

Your regional sales manager can advise you on which material is best suited for your application. Here are a few guidelines to help get your started:

US Energy Sciences’ Reflector Materials:

White Paint Aluminum – WA – 91% Reflectance
  • For retrofitting Acrylic Lens Troffer Fixtures and Industrial Strips
  • Excellent diffusion
  • Lowest cost reflector option
  • #1 selling material for Retrofit Kits
  • Carries a 10 year warranty

Enhanced Aluminum – EA – 95% Reflectance
  • For Highbay Fixtures and higher mounting applications for maximum light level output
  • Mirror finished product
  • Highest quality reflector material
  • Carries a 25 year warranty

Specular Aluminum – SA – 86% Reflectance
  • Warehouses with shelving and parabolics
  • Mirror finished product
  • Controlled lighting direction
  • Carries a 25 year warranty

Material Specs are also listed on our website for your convenience.

We introduce to you Cleveland Ricks! Cleveland is one of our most long-standing, outstanding team members, and operates the Trumpf in the Turret Deparment – which is the most technologically advanced machinery operated. We value him for his machine knowledge, work ethic and punctuality. ‘Round shop we “Start the day by Cleve and end the day by Cleve.”

Cleveland is one hard-working all-American. He was born in the “Million Pine City” of Soperton, Georgia and grew up in the “Sweet Onion City” of Vidalia, Georgia, where US Energy Sciences’ corporate building is located.
Cleveland learned his strength in work ethic at the tender age of four years old, when he sought to help harvest cotton with his mother and uncles in the cotton fields.

Throughout Ricks’s lifetime he has balanced several labor-intense and demanding jobs, and  has maintained a strong  career in sheet metal fabrication for 35 years. His experience in work puts him about 20 years beyond his age number!

Cleveland left high school early on but continued his academics just ten years later, unwaivering, and has progressed his education with applicable certifications for  precision measurement, blue-print reading and welding – all of which account for his extraordinary expertise in his job position.

As Mr. Ricks works toward retirement, he plans to continue working for US Energy Sciences in a part time position, while achieving his dream of owning “Cleveland Metal & Woodworks”.

We are grateful for Cleveland’s driving forces behind his motivation; his belief in quality, performance and work ethic.
