January 2010 Newsletter

Welcome to our January 2010 newsletter.
Ok so it's the end of January, but Happy New Year still!

What an amazing year 2009 has been: we launched the B£, attracting global media coverage, we enlisted some 60 new biz since the launch, bringing us now to a total of 130 businesses accepting the B£, and we even opened a community shop in the heart of Brixton Market!

Some of you have already come to say hi at the shop, and we look forward to seeing more of you this month. So here’s what’s been happening in December.

Latest news

  •  We have launched a consultation on B£ aims and values, and about the B£ becoming a CIC (Community Interest Company). Please let us know your thoughts by logging onto:http://brixtonpound.org/getinvolved/consultation/

  • The Brixton Pound Group Interest Company - Could you be a director? The Brixton Pound Group, the steering group of the Brixton Pound, will officially incorporate as a registered limited liability company with clear community aims. Although there are some skills and experience that we feel would be particularly useful (e.g. business experience, community links, accountancy) essentially passion and commitment to making the Brixton Pound work are the most important qualities our directors need to have. Please fill in the form here explaining why you think you fit the bill.
  • Work on Windrush Square has been progressing and is almost complete, and the new-look square is due to open on the last weekend in February. Watch this space for communication of future community events there.
Business

As part of the Spacemakers initiative an array of new shops and businesses have opened up in Brixton Market, Grenville Arcade, and the great news is that they accept B£ (though some may not be displaying the B£ sticker yet, so please do offer to pay in B£ anyway). Here they are:

Herd - art and fashion
Brixton Cornercopia - locally sourced fine foods
Lisette And The Fox - vintage and retro clothing
Remade in Brixton - recycled and remade textiles and crafts
The Wonderful World of... - baby clothes, restored furniture, arts and crafts

OFFERS
  • Brixton Therapy Centre is still offering £5 off for all new clients if paid in B£,  so you can start the year with some pampering.
  • For any other continuing offers, please check our website.

Community

Throughout December the B£ team was busy with a number of community events:

A B£ procession in and around Brixton Market saw Annalisa, Annie, Himi, Susie, and Clare (pictured, left to right) mingle with people and businesses, answering questions and promoting the scheme.

A Santa’s Grotto, as well as a Christmas craft workshop also offered a chance for people to visit our community shop.

Also, Simon and filmmaker Fiona Melville went out and about armed with B£ and a video camera to document Simon's Christmas shopping, and to highlight the range of wonderful and quirky stuff that you can find at local independent stores in Brixton.
