Is Your Sunscreen Safe?

Until recently, I didn't think twice about my sunscreen, and I certainly never questioned whether certain ingredients like vitamin A (retinyl palmitate) or oxybenzone were potentially contributing to skin cancer.

The FDA recently stated it is "not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreens alone help prevent skin cancer". While they do prevent sunburns, surprisingly little else is known about their effectiveness. So remember to bring your hat, sunglasses and protective clothing this summer.

The Environmental Working Group's 2010 sunscreen guide can also help navigate the marketing hype to find a sunscreen that is both safe and effective.  To look up your sunscreen, or find a comprehensive database of safe sunscreens, visit http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/.

A refreshing summer treat
For a refreshing and healthy summer time treat whip up a Hemp-Goji Acai Bowl with two times the antioxidants as pomegranates, vitamins C, E, and EFAs, acai fights aging and keeps cells and skin supple. Acai also contains more calcium than milk.

Main Ingredients
3 packages frozen acai smoothie packs (100 grams of each)
1 banana
3/4 cup pecans
1/3 to 1/2 cup filtered water, as needed
1/4 cup agave syrup (optional)
Toppings
4 tablespoons hemp nuts
4 tablespoons goji berries

Place the acai, banana, pecans, water and agave syrup (if using) in the high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
To serve, scoop the acai mixture into 4 glasses or bowls and top each with 1 tablespoon hemp nuts and 1 tablespoon of goji berries. Serve immediately.

Yoga Boosts Heart Health

A recent study in the International Journal of Medical Engineering and Information supports a direct link between a regular yoga practice and heart health.

Research noted yoga's impact on the nervous system and showed that those with a regular practice have a parasympathetic nervous system that helps them ease out of stressful situations more easily translating into more resistance to stress and an overall healthier heart.
