Introducing Susan Neely
a Philadelphia's First
Toastmaster

by Susan Neely

I moved to Philadelphia in 2008 and joined Toastmasters not long after I got here. It was on my list for many years, but my schedule never allowed me to join, previously.
I have only given three speeches so far not counting the disastrous attempt at the humorous speech. I think I have learned a great deal about the nuances of speech construction and delivery but still have far to go!

Most people are curious about why I would move to Philadelphia from Florida for the next stage of my life. I almost feel as if I have already been retired after taking care of my Mom for several years before her passing. I also have a son who currently lives in Fishtown. He is a nurse in ER at Presby and has wondered, audibly, more than once about why we didn’t come back to civilization earlier. It is also my family roots that draw me back.

My Dad grew up in Upper Darby, and I don’t know much about his family since he was disinherited after college. My Mom’s family was among the early Pennsylvania Pioneers, and I have a lot to learn about them.

Originally, I thought I would be able to go back to school for something more interesting than pharmacy, but I left all of my money back in Florida in a series of negative transactions. I am hoping that I might get a job with the State of Pennsylvania as a liaison with the Patient Safety Authority. The lack of budget held the job up so first interviews were scheduled for the middle of November. It would be a perfect combination of job requirements for my rather varied skill set, including the continual quest to improve oral communication.

I haven’t worked since July, but I have been busy. I am active in my church,Tenth Presbyterian, where I am one of the teachers in the conversational English class on Friday nights. We have students from all over the world who are often in research or advanced schooling but want to improve their conversational English. I love it very much. I also tutor one night a week with children who have recently immigrated. Although I am not certified to teach ESL, sometimes they just need some help with homework or practice. We sometimes just put a puzzle together or play a game while their parents go to class. On most Fridays since I have to go downtown, I go to one of the historical libraries and lose myself reading about Mad Anthony Wayne or some facet of medical history. I tutor on Wednesday mornings at Whosoever Gospel Mission where my student just moved up to college prep, today. I will have a new student next week. I haven’t sold any writing, yet, but am working on a few projects which include a children’s story about a Grumpy Groundhog.

I have learned to be content with very little since coming to the big city. I am as close to being homeless as I ever hope to be, but I have faith that things will be better soon. When they are, I hope to continue to remember the poor and hopeless and their struggles of life.

Editor's Note: Susan, in addition to being our club's reining Ahh Queen, is truly a person of great courage and conviction and a wonderful (always smiling, always interested) asset to our club.

Philadelphia’s First Member Pat Paulus Shares Her Experiences At Toastmaster’s District 38 Fall Conference

by Pat Paulus

Some of my favorite and most rewarding Toastmaster experiences are the District 38 Fall and Spring conferences and the International Conference.  What makes these events so awesome is that the best Toastmasters has to offer rises to higher levels at these events.

These conferences provide opportunities to establish new relationships, find mentors, expand existing relationships, share experiences, brainstorm with like-minded Toastmasters, learn from the esteemed speakers, and most importantly – bring these new, exciting, creative ideas back to our club for everyone’s benefit.

District 38 2009 Fall ConferenceOne of the most exciting features in recent District 38 conferences is the extremely high caliber of speakers gathered.  Extremely esteemed Toastmasters from outside our district have attended and presented some of their best material. This conference was no exception.

For those of you who have heard our District’s very own Past International President Dilip Abayasakara speak, it is hard to imagine anyone better. Dilip competed twice in the International Speech contest and twice finished second. The second time he competed, he lost to Dana LaMon, who traveled all the way from Lancaster, California to share an unforgettable lesson on how and why he won.

Also very memorable and valuable was our very own past District Governor and current Division D Governor, Robert Cranston who spoke about getting the most out of your connections.

One of our District webmasters, Jim Marshall, gave for many clubs, a much needed demonstration lecture on setting up and maintaining a club website for free using Toastmasters’ cookie cutter website software.  We are extremely fortunate to have John Boxmeyer, who maintains our club website, which is so much nicer than the free Toastmaster software.  Jim even stated that if someone in your club can maintain a more sophisticated website, use that person. We are blessed that John does this for us.

Of course, other highlights were the contests. Deb Flage won the Table Topics contest. Peter Boone won second place. The Table Topic question was “The district theme is ‘Pay It Forward. How do you individually ‘Pay It Forward’? In the Humorous contest, Charles Wilson was first, George Philip finished second. All of the speeches were very funny and entertaining.

Fun Night Friday night also had highlights. The food was excellent. We watched professional ballroom dancers dance to different tunes, picked up some dance steps, and then danced ourselves. During our main Friday night events, Loretta Casalaina entertained and educated us on different ways to deliver humor. This was followed by some of our funniest Toastmasters delivering very famous comedy skits. We also networked, shared experiences, and most importantly, had fun.

Our club was recognized at the recognition luncheon as a Select Distinguished club.

This conference was a little different for me as I was the only Toastmaster from our club. We usually have several club members in attendance. Let’s reestablish that at the Spring Conference Friday 4/30 and Saturday 5/1/2010 in Harrisburg. For more details, ask me.

Editor's Note: Thank you Pat for taking the time to share your enthusiastic report on the Fall Conference. Based on your review, I for one, am motivated to attend the Spring Conference in Harrisburg!
