Ross Visits With NYACD Directors
The New York Association of Conservation Districts held its
annual meeting this week along beautiful Lake George at the
Fort William Henry Resort and Conference Center. NACD
Interim CEO Brad Ross gave opening remarks after which the
district officials and employees participated in breakout
sessions that focused on marketing and outreach to
legislators, measuring district performance, and preparing
for natural disasters. David Decker, project coordinator
for the Lake George Watershed Coalition, highlighted the
conservation work underway to protect Lake George and
strongly endorsed the great work of the Warren County SWCD
in helping local communities implement conservation
practices in the watershed.
Senate Schedules Climate Bill Hearing
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee scheduled
its first hearing to review provisions of S.1733, the Clean
Energy Jobs and American Power Act. The hearing is the
first of several hearings expected in Senate committees to
review Climate legislation. The bill is companion
legislation to H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and
Security Act which passed the House of Representatives in
June. The hearing will be next Tuesday, October 27 at 9 a.m.
Eastern, and will be webcast from the Environment and Public
Works Committee website.
Field to Market Field Print Calculator Available Online
NACD, as a member of Field to Market: The Keystone Alliance
for Sustainable Agriculture, has been working with
commodity, conservation, agribusiness and food companies
regarding sustainable agriculture practices. The trial
version of an online Field Print calculator developed by
the Field to Market Alliance is now available at
http://www.fieldtomarket.org/. The tool is designed to help
corn, cotton, soybean and wheat growers assess
sustainability. Feedback on the tool is needed to make
improvements on future versions of the calculator.
EPA Announces Strengthened Enforcement Efforts
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently
announced that it is stepping up efforts on compliance and
enforcement of the Clean Water Act (CWA). EPA Administrator
Jackson made the announcement while testifying before the
House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and
discussing EPA’s role in implementing and enforcing
provisions of the CWA. The Agency plans to strengthen the
way it addresses water pollution challenges by utilizing
comprehensive enforcement approaches, working with states
to achieve greater consistency throughout the country, and
using updated information technology.

2010 Urban and Community Forestry Grant
The National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory
Committee is accepting pre-proposals for the U.S. Forest
Service’s competitive 2010 National Urban and Community
Forestry Challenge Cost-Share Grant Program. It is
anticipated that approximately $900,000 will be awarded to
support urban and community forestry projects that are
national in scope or have a widespread impact. Proposals
that only have a local application and impact will not be

The deadline to submit a pre-proposal is December 15.
SWCS and NAAEE 2010 Conferences Call for Proposals
Showcase the importance of conservation districts across
the United States by submitting a presentation proposal for
two upcoming conferences.
The Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) is accepting
proposals until December 17, 2009. SWCS will host their
65th International Annual Conference themed “Ecosystem
Services: Applications for Conservation Science, Policy,
and Practice” on July 18-21, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. Go to

The North American Association of Environmental
Education (NAAEE) is accepting presentation proposals
through February 1, 2010 for their 39th Annual Conference,
scheduled for September 29-October 2, 2010 in Buffalo, N.Y.
The conference theme is “Environmental Education: Building
Connections, Bridging Gaps.” Additional information is
