A Day of Remembrance We are fortunate to send our first Visit Newsletter today, October 8, the anniversary of Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche's parinirvana. Celebrating the Return! is as much about resting our minds on Rinpoche's incomparable example as it is welcoming with devotion his young incarnation. So today we offer a number of recollections by some of his closest students (and our teachers). Please also enjoy this lovely photograph by Matthieu Ricard of Khyentse Rinpoche expressing such joy and delight in the presence of a young tulku. "Frankly I don't remember Rinpoche ever taking a day off. Of course there were quieter days, but rather than catch up on his sleep or watch a movie, he would gather some of his older students or students of his own masters around him, and they would spend the time talking about their teachers, recounting important events of their lives and sharing personal memories. This was Rinpoche's idea of fun, and for those who were fortunate and wise enough to participate, even this recreational activity was tremendously beneficial." - Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, from Brilliant Moon "Rinpoche was so courageous, not crying in pain [when undergoing an operation without anesthetic] but shedding tears when he talked about his teachers. ...How can we understand his outer, inner and secret qualities with our ordinary minds? All we can say about him is related to his outer appearance; we cannot get to the depth of his realization and inner qualities, as we cannot conceive of them." - Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, from Brilliant Moon "When I was in the presence of my teacher, the very evenness, clarity and spaciousness of his mind naturally exposed my self-importance. I knew he could always see through my self-absorption, no matter how significant or complex I thought my story was. This was an unspoken understanding we had as teacher and student. This kind of communication was one of the ways I learned from him. This is what is meant by the teacher as mirror: The teacher is the mirror that reflets how not only how we are stuck but our basic sanity as well." - Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, from It's Up to You Announcing the Dates of the Visit August 5th - 15th, 2010 Events in Vermont, New York City and Colorado will follow a similar program, including talks by Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche and Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche about the former Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche; an empowerment and teaching with Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche; a celebratory tsok, movie screening, slide show, and more. Parting Thought “Do not encumber your mind with useless thoughts. What good is it to brood over the past and fret about the future? Dwell in the simplicity of the present moment. Live in harmony with the dharma. Make it the heart of your experience. Be the master of your own destiny.” — Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche |
