The Vision of the Celebrating the Return Last summer Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche said, whether we met Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche in person, in a dream or vision, or through his teachings, our lives would not be the same had we not. It holds true, now still, that one word of Khyentse Rinpoche’s wisdom in a book (or an email or blog!), or a glimpse of his serene and stable countenance in a photograph or video, can evoke strong faith and resolve in the reality of buddhanature. This appreciation forms the heart of the vision for Celebrating the Return.
In outer form, Celebrating the Return will be a remembrance and celebration of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche’s life and activity: through slideshows, video, talks and teachings. Known as a Gathering of Disciples, the main events in Vermont and Colorado will focus on his memory. We call this a ‘gathering of disciples’ because it is within the sangha that the presence of the teacher lives on, if not forever, as each student takes the blessings of the master to their path, until enlightenment. This assembly of practitioners is the second element of the vision: to join together as disciples old and new within the scope of such a master’s compassion and kindness. As Rinpoche went on to say, through Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and other great teachers like him, we witness the activity of a true bodhisattva in this world (“the return of the Jedi”, as Rinpoche fondly put it). The incalculable strength and kindness of a bodhisattva expresses itself in their vow to return repeatedly to help those not yet aware of their own nature. In the birth, life and training of Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche, we witness this very dedication occurring before our eyes. In the context of devotion and remembrance, we warmly welcome Yangsi Rinpoche as he continues the activity of his predecessor. This forms the third aspect of the vision, and we will have the great fortune to receive teachings and empowerments from Yangsi Rinpoche during his visit. As indicated by Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, the grandson and spiritual heir of Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, these three aspects of commemoration, gathering and introduction form the core of all events that make up the world-wide 2010 Centennial Celebration of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche’s life. (Read more from Rabjama Rinpoche about the celebrations.) Finally, in Celebrating the Return we witness Kongtrul Rinpoche receive the reincarnation of his own teacher here in America, where Rinpoche has worked at the behest of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche to spread the dharma for more than 20 years. As students, we can observe this relationship between teacher and student as a further, deeply poignant dimension of this visit. And rest assured, in the future, that Khyentse Rinpoche will return again and again to touch many lives. Watch Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche's presentation of the vision of the Visit. |
