We Asked; You Answered. Three more Dedicated Committee Chairs for 2010-11Yogini Bhagat, Poonam Kaul, and Kinnari Shelat have signed up to lead our Classroom Celebrations, Disaster Preparedness and F.A.M.E. programs respectively. THANK YOU Your board would like to share just one of many stories of what dedication looks like. Kinnari has signed up to chair F.A.M.E. F.A.M.E. stands for Fine Arts Mini Experience, a program which consists entirely of dedicated volunteers like you. Thanks to F.A.M.E., our children learn about new artists and composers every month. Kinnari participated in F.A.M.E. for many years, taking a break last year and returning this year to help lead the program. That is dedication. It is a commitment to serve that gives 100% to the effort, but without depleting the source, the volunteer. So that we don't deplete our valued volunteer, Kinnari has also requested a co-chair, someone to help with the program preparation. It could be any member willing to spend time preparing slideshows and/or assisting with the execution of the program at school. According to Kinnari, it could even be a working parent with the right skill set (i.e. PowerPoint) and the willingness to follow through with service. If this is you, please contact your board Vice Presidents at vp@mvsa-fremont.org. In addition to needing volunteers, as Kinnari has demonstrated, MVSA also needs continuity -- individuals willing to take ownership of their piece of MVSA and nurture it for future generations. No public school thrives without the dedication and service of its volunteers. Kinnari is just one of many fabulous volunteers at MVSA. Join in, meet new people and have a direct positive impact on your child's school at the same time. We still have school lunches to serve. . .and Mission Valley still needs noon supervisors. Your school needs volunteers to help out for an hour or so each day at noon through the end of the year. As a volunteer, you will insure that children are able to enjoy their lunchtime with adult supervision present. A number of our 2009-2010 noon supervisors are no longer available to help out and we need interim relief. To lend a hand, please contact either Jennifer Graves or Chris Richardson in our office at (510) 656-2000. Update on Scholastic Book Fair for 2010-2011In May, we reported on our website that the school board voted unanimously to restore the hours for librarians and media technicians to 100 percent next year, using federal stimulus money to pay the approximately $1.09 million additional expense. An added benefit for MVSA is that Ms. Jenny Langford, our librarian, will once again take the lead in running next year's book fair. She will be ably assisted by co-chair and esteemed MVSA member Theresa Bettencourt who took the reins this year when the school ironically did not have adequate resources to lead a program that earns money for the school. Thank you to all. Update on Later Start Times at Secondary Schools From Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) Board member Lara York, operational costs have made the implementation of later start times at MSJ HS and other secondary schools unfeasible. Here's the text of a recent 5/28 email message from her in response to an earlier FUSD Board request for parent input. From: Lara York Sent: Fri, May 28, 2010 4:27:18 PM Since sending this out, I have received a few inquiries as to what the ongoing costs are in association with the change in start times. On Wednesday, the School Board voiced it's disappointment that these transportation costs were not presented and part of the initial agenda item when we voted on the change of times. As many of you are aware, due to the budget crisis, last year the School Board made the difficult decision to extend the secondary busing radius to 3 miles, meaning to be eligible for a school bus for junior high or high school, a student must live 3 miles away from the school, "as the crow flies". This left only 3 bus routes in all the secondary schools. With the compressed changes in start and release times in the Options, this would mean an addition of 3 bus routes. Thanks to Nargesse for asking ahead of the meeting about the two other options. The additional costs for the options are: Option A cost the addition of two buses in the AM and PM. Time and mileage cost is the $103,163.76. Option B cost the addition of two buses in the AM and PM. Time and mileage cost is the $103,163.76. Option C cost the addition of three buses in the PM only for a cost of around $70,000, but the elementary buses would start as early as 6:30 AM pick-ups. The School Board had a difficult decision, but given the on-going budget crisis which is forcing FUSD to cut over $27M in services for next school year alone, adding new services and costs do not seem fiscally prudent at this time. It is left open that this can return to us for future years implementation when financially feasible. Thank you all for understanding and caring about all the kids, ~ Lara Our Schools, Our Future, Our Responsibility Fremont Unified
